It remains my GOTY and it got absolutely buried by this year's releases. My low faith in SE actually restored itself a bit this year between that and FFXVI.

Shame that series sucks with character interaction

Common sense says it may not taste good, but it'll make a turd.

I played all of Octopath 1 except I didn't complete the annoying final boss

Tried Octopath 2 and had to wonder if maybe I didn't like Octopath 1 but just thought Therion was really hot.

I like the combat but it got stale after 30 hours and build variety didn't seem to be there. Writing was also just too melodramatic for me.

Agreed TC, it's great. But I think Star Ocean: Second Story R is better.

That's enough for me to never try it. Octopath I thought it was ok to literally have the same gameplay for like 30 hrs in the most vapid storytelling I've ever seen. The only thing entertaining that whole game was the first 5-6 recruiting when it was still fresh, then near the end where you fight the extra class bosses with less tools. Otherwise that game was ass

If II hadn't amended that by an excessive amount, it's enough to not let me try, cuz a lot of people forgave Octo I for that one for some reason, and I don't trust anybody anymore on RPG opinions

Yeah tbh it's not like I'm super picky with jrpgs. People complain about Persona 5 combat being dumbed down but I had lots of fun with that because fusing new personas and picking complementary moves between teammates was fun. Octopath classes have like 10 moves, 4 of which seem useful, and you just use those the entire game? You can multiclass which gives a bit of extra variety but not a ton.

It could be there is some big game changer coming down the pipeline that I'm quitting too early to see but the mechanics just don't seem deep enough for a long game.

Octopath 1 writing is pretty dang bad to be fair

Therion's story is about him getting Stockholm syndrome for the rich fucks who put him to work

There's a side quest where you can help a local government disarm a revolutionary group by stealing all their weapons. The justification for this is that the elite are totally planning to fix the downtrodden district any day now. Just two more weeks bro

Honestly it was even more insulting to me that they even attempted to put all the stories together. Several of the characters straight up had nothing stories that made me question why I'm enduring an non-changing gameplay for fucking hours to see them. The character convos in between chapters were so few in between, and making the recruitment of all the characters non-canon was a shit decision that aggressively hurt the story. Like we're supposed to believe the other characters are conveniently not there while some of the shit's going down?

The extra classes needed to come about 20 hours earlier, but also another layer of classes on top of it that just broke the game's balance that was optional. The first few classes you get stuck with for 30-40 hours are so vapid, and the enemy variety somehow doesn't change. Most of the bosses felt the same after a while.

Octopath I was just a bad game. People need to stop copiuming about it. I'm also ignoring one sentence statements that don't add anything to the conversation, cuz you can just go to reddit for that shit

I enjoyed Octopath 2 much more than the first tbh.

I'd give the first a 7.5, I'd give the second a 9.0. The characters, story, world design, battling, and boss fights, were all just better.
