The House of Representatives is expected to vote Tuesday on a short-term spending bill to avoid a government shutdown. But amid conservative opposition to the stopgap, House Speaker Mike Johnson's proposal will need to garner significant Democratic support if it hopes to pass.

Government funding is set to run out at the end of the day on Friday, and Johnson's bill is the only funding measure currently being debated in the House or the Senate. The Tuesday vote will determine the path Congress takes this week in an effort to avoid a shutdown.

It wasn't clear that the plan had enough Republican support to survive initial procedural votes. So conference leadership moved to bring the measure to the floor Tuesday with House rules suspended. Any bills considered under suspension of the rules require a two-thirds majority of the House to pass.

Working with Democrats to keep the government open is what triggered the push to oust former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy last month. At this point, it does not seem that Johnson will face the same fate.

The freedom caucus got McCarthy removed because he worked with Democrats to pass a spending bill and now Johnson is doing the same thing because the reality is it's either that or a shutdown.

But Johnson got more Christian approved opinions, so it is alright.

And this is why I think Johnson is done and an even more MAGA house speaker will be being voted on by the new year. The freedom caucas has one job at this point, make governance so untenable that it forces Trump back in to "fix" things by making the democrats look useless. Certain MAGA house members have already called themselves ungovernable. You think its a joke that they displayed their, we are all domestic terrorists banner at CPAC?

Guessing it will get a pass.

Johnson's bill funds some parts of the government through Jan 19th and some parts through Feb 2nd, so we get to do this again twice in two months.

This might even fail the "Hastert rule".

Should be interesting if it's just a dozen or so opposing or a lot more.

Senate will punt on Ukraine and Israel aid until after Thanksgiving, Schumer says

They can punt all Israel aid that isnt strictly iron dome restocks for eternity tbh but that Ukraine aid shouldve happened months ago.

This gap in funding is making the stalemate in Ukraine so much worse. I'd still give the advantage to Ukraine based on recent moves, but it's going to be painful if we don't have their back this winter.

It keeps funding at their current levels. That's why the freedom caucus doesn't like it because he's not trying to force a bunch of spending cuts but if he did it would never pass the Senate. But I think the maga clowns know that and just want a shutdown.

I read there are a bunch of bad things in this like cuts to medicaid, and that the White House doesn't view it as a serious bill at all. Isn't it DOA?

The bill is also the same.

Well, the spending bill passed in the House with mostly Democratic support. Over 90 Republicans voted against it.

There's also been reports of more infighting among House Republicans.

I'm honestly surprised it went through. And I have a feeling that bolded part is going to continue happening daily for as long as they have the extremists.

Man, they want that shutdown so badly but I doubt they have the power to remove Johnson like they did McCarthy
