So far, Simon details 4 things:

War on Drugs

"Tough on crime" pushing for more felony charges when they otherwise wouldn't

I'm 15 minutes in. 23 minutes in starts into private prisons being gross as fuck, with profits over people 100% of the time. He goes on to say that the private prison system is merely a symptom, not the disease. Lack of education plays a very prominent factor in incarceration levels as well. The cutting of social support systems and education for inmates has led to a drastic increase in recidivism rates, which costs tax payer's more money for incarceration than actually letting inmates focus on life after jail.

Took a break for lunch before listening to it some more. He's gone into the conjugal visits and how the prison system views any benefit to the prisoner as an excisable luxury instead of leaving them with some carrots to dangle to reward good behaviour.

So far, "saving money" (but not really) and a need to punish people are the prevailing factors at play. To put it in stark contrast, he brings up Norway, who had the same type of system that the US had before they went on wildly divergent paths, seeking rehabilitation instead of punishment. Recividism rates have gone down to around 25% to 30% after five years as opposed to 40-78% in the US.

I just finished listening to it. The biggest factors for the broken judicial system in the US is the 'tough on crime' politicized mantra, and lack of support for inmates before, during, and after incarceration. Fairly interesting.

Did you know some prisons seperate their inmates based on how much commissary money they have? Basically creating a class structure in prisons themselves. Good times.
