Sounds like Tokyo, everyone loves it and loves to visit it, but probably a terrible place to live.

I lived there for four years for school and hated it. Then again, I don't like cities in general.

I love the idea of walkable cities but I will say I can't imagine spending upwards of 1500 bucks a month for a living space the size of my closet.

The smell is vomit-inducing.

I fucking hate it. It's a third world country wearing an elegant dress.

I love Chinatown and the areas surrounding Times Square, but the square itself, and getting to that point from the docks or bridge, is just gross and smelly.

I've lived in Queens for my entire life and I generally like it. I hate going to Manhattan or Brooklyn though.

Been here over 3 decades and I still love it. Nothing really compares tbh.

People who live(d) there hype it up to a ridiculous degree, but having been there plenty of times I personally would rather live somewhere else that doesn't permanently reek of piss.

Been there a bunch of times since it's only a few hours away for me. I like it, not sure if I would want to live there. I do like just walking around the city when I visit.

It depends on what you expect from it.
But it has virtually everything.

It is a fact that it is one of the most important cities in the world.
Or as John Lennon would say, It is the Modern Rome.

I will say, it can be overwhelming if you visit without a plan to do one thing.
Do one thing, and then go adventuring.

To live there, you basically have to be rich, or born there.
Also, as a side note: New Yorkers and not as rude as they are made out to be.

Haha, I was down in the financial district a long time ago...my friend was picking up fliers for a rave upstate.
It was funny because as we got out of the apartment, where saw some of the first WiFi, we kinda walked around down there.

It was funny because we all felt the same thing...."For The City that never sleeps, it's pretty quiet"
All you heard were air conditioners.

That would be the last time I stood under the World Trade Center buildings.
Which BTW: I knew would get hit again.

It was a cool trip, completely unplanned.

The people who like NYC are going to downtown manhatten. Those who dislike living there are most likely not in downtown manhatten.

brooklyn has plenty of stuff going for it

most 20 and 30something transplants are all around williamsburg, bushwick, bed stuy, ridgewood, crown heights, etc

plus dumbo, brooklyn heights, cobble hill, downtown brooklyn are essentially super eastern manhattan

Bringing a car anywhere near that city is a nightmare.
Ironically it feels like an SUV makes more sense then it does in The Adirondacks.
And I don't even like SUV's.

But I did hear The Bronx are currently pretty rough once you leave that general area.

As an Aussie where do have a legit "big banana"....it's underwhelming. We also have a "big pineapple" which is about the same.

I lived in NYC. Now I live in LA. NYC is far more exciting. LA is too boring (except for the occasional police chase).

I actually did.
Just friends of course but I did.
In the same vain I told friends that the 90s would be our roaring 20s.
I am not so sure they knew what I was saying at the time.

However in both cases I was correct.

Too crowded

It's fun to visit. People move fast tho. It can be mistaken for rudeness but if you dilly dally placing an order at a deli you're gonna get cussed out but I think it's just the culture.
