My opinion : Amazing intro, average gameplay and average story. I have no clue why it's considered one of the best game of all time.

the main plot is generic, but the character interactions and writing bring it over the top.

I call it Sad Uncharted.

I don't think it's an all-time great but it's direction and voice acting is what really made it stand out to me at the time. Really no surprise it became such a critical success, but the "greatest story ever told" stuff is just hype for the HBO show.

People love the characters and their development even if it's predictable or not that original. What the game did a great job of is getting people to insert themselves as Joel and thats what made the game as big as it is. Other than that yeah it's average everything else.

more than most games, the characters you come across feel like "real" people, who have experienced trauma, shut themselves off because of it, and then found something to live for again.

I just feel like the characters have depth to them, and relate to each other in mostly realistic ways (considering the kind of world they live in).

I will recognize the VA are talented, but there's so many video game stories I prefered over this. Even though it was a point and click adventure, I liked the characters better in the first Walking dead game(And I am using a horror game as an example for fairness)

The hype comes from it being one of the first "big" games pretending to be a movie, so people pushed it as better than it was.

I mean, wasn't it intended that it felt a bit like a movie?

I guess people consider the term to be a negative thing kinda like how "Award Baiting" isn't exactly a praise either.
