Tons of good games (for the time) came out that gen. And every gen, pretty much.

I quit console gaming during 7th gen and didn't return til the 9th. So yes, easily the worst.

Hardware wise yes

The Wii was weak and 3rd party companies couldn't figure out the controls to make good games, it also has a lot of shovelware because of the controls

360 red ring of death and having to buy a new console, the kinect

PS3 overpriced and at first had backwards capabilities but were removed eventually. Playstation Eye/Move. This gen is the one that has the most different versions PS versions out of all of them some were not released in the US or EU but it has the original 20GB had no WiFi options, the regular one with backward capabilities, the removed capabilities one, Slim and the super slim. That's a total of 5

Everyone needs to remember a lot of BS outside of specific games itself that happened that gen >_>

-PS3 being way overpriced
-360 having constant RROD
-360 controllers were AA batteries only for a bit iirc
-Wii having shovelware flooding its library
-Wiimote waggling being a shitty substitute for a button press (Only Wii Sports was the only really good motion game imo)
-Online passes for games if you bought them 2nd hand
-PSN getting hacked and going offline for a couple of months iirc
-Games overall having more bugs than they used to have in the PS2 era
-I remember everyone complaining that all shooters had a 2 weapon system and all protags had that generic Space Marine white guy buzzcut look, as well as all the graphics looking gray lol

It just seems like there was a lot of bullshit in this gen

Things have only gotten worse since though.
8th gen had nothing good. Slot machines, rereleases and interactive movies took over, gameplay went in the dumpster forever. Most people were very happy about this and because of that, there is no hope.
9th gen is replicating 8th. Cool.

Late 00s online was fun at least even if the games were going downhill. 7th gen wasn't too bad. From where we are, it looks nice.

I agree with the premise for consoles probably, was the beginning of a lot of the bullshit practices that turn me away from consoles now and great indie options were just beginning to get off the ground as well so we didn't have that benefit yet like we have in the past 10 years.

Ehhhh, kinda? To be honest there was still a lot of really good games especially if you started with the xbox 360 first, and online gaming on the 360 was pretty fun for a good bit of the games (saints row 1's online was mad fun and one of those "had to be there" games. Protect da' pimp was wild, lol. Gears of war 1 and 3 being great (2 is eh to me). Left 4 dead 1 and 2 was also great).

I think a lot of younger gamers today just do not know and the older gamers forgot just how good xbox live arcade was when it really started blowing up. It helped a lot of indie devs get their foot in the door when it comes to their games being released on consoles and a lot of this stuff was better than the bigger budget games at the time period (stuff like the dishwasher, shank, dust an elysian tale, shadow complex, alien hominid HD, and xbla being a good place to get older releases as downloads like street fighter 2 turbo and castlevania symphony of the night, etc.). The PS3 was a bit slower to catch on but once the good games started coming out they were cool. Nintendo was doing them with the Wii.....now me personally I admit I wasn't too fond of the mandatory waggle controls in a lot of their games during this time. Nintendo had some of those nice 2D or 2.5D games like wario land shake it and donkey kong country returns but then they got to have the mandatory shake controls and its like fuck man. Portable gaming was pretty great with the DS and psp.

For me personally the crappiest thing was just how badly a lot of japanese devs (the ones that specialized in creating those good but humble budget AA games from the previous generation. Even the bigger ones like capcom was getting tripped up in the HD 360 and PS3 era a little though thanks to dudes like keji inafune damn near giving up when western developers started popping off when it comes to console gaming) was stumbling for awhile. Some of these japanese companies never actually recovered and shutdown. A lot of western devs thrived. Another thing I wasn't too crazy about was the love for the gritty color pallets then....we had so many brown and gray unreal engine games, lol.

The online pass thing sucked ass. Its also true we had way too many similar looking mctough dudes as a MC for the western dev 360 and PS3 games being made then.

*Also insert the goober from resident evil 6 jake muller...a guy designed to appeal to the trends at the time. We will most likely never see him in a RE game again. Well he was in this japanese biohazard card battle mobile game....or maybe its chinese mobile game. Something like that*

You also had a dude like cliffy B. who tried to throw PC gamers under the bus, so that was a whole thing that happened.

One thing I did like about the next PS4, xbox one, and......wii u console generation is that indie gaming is really starting to kick off and start bringing some of that game variety back that was missing a little from the previous one. Color is starting to return to the world a bit.

I wouldn't say it was the worst, but it did introduce or popularize a lot of shitty industry practices that have contributed to a downhill slide from that generation forward.

Well yeah the consoles were dogshit, if you had kept the discussion limited to primary hardware then yeah that was a terrible generation.

Thing is most people care more about games and PS4 era games had a massive quality dropoff (except for the Switch's I guess).

This, although imo the pswii60 era also sucked quite a bit. I have absolutely no nostalgia for it whatsoever. It kinda marked the end of the "soul" era of gaming imo.

The issues I have with the PS4/XB1 gen are that technically, it wasn't an impressive leap but also a lot of games were simply re-released from the previous gen onto it. Not to mention the "need" for pro versions later down the road given that it couldn't deliver solid performance once the cross gen period ended.

Probably. But it's personally my favorite, with the PS2-Camecube-Xbox-Dreamcast era right behind it.

Yeah, I remember Japanese devs having a lot of trouble adjusting to the HD era. They had trouble planning out deadlines and underestimated the amount of work it took compared to the PS2 era

360 (and 3DS) were the only period of time I really used consoles for online. I've only used PC for online games since.
I feel like the nonhardware complaints are still things going on these days.

Ive ben gaming extensively since 1993, with SNES being my first system. Owned most of the systems that came out after. I feel that every generation since I began was better than the last, with games getting more diverse and complex as well. Theres more to play than ever before.
