I'm down to my last 5 gigs on my SSD. I have an HD that I can move things to if need be.

There's surely a significant amount of unnecessary bloat going on somewhere, but no way I can see to clearly understand where things are going. I've checked the downloads, videos, pictures and documents folder. Not much going on there.

Do you have any games installed? Games, especially modern ones can be pretty massive. Other stuff might be if you have video files or a lot of music saved somewhere.

I moved my steam library to my HD, but there's maybe some other launcher that's storing them locally. I'll take a look at that.

Check your Roaming folder, you can easily go to it by typing %appdata% in the windows search bar.
It's where a ton of games save data now. So if you game a lot, it will be filled with save files, saved maps/world states,... It's also where some games seem to store their mods which can easily lead to bloat if you're unaware of it.

There's a program called SpaceSniffer that will graphically show you everything on your PC. The larger the size, the bigger the square. You can instantly see what's taking up so much space.

I used an app called c cleaner years ago to free up space by deleting unnecessary files. Is that still a thing?

Edit: it is

disk cleanup will only get you so far

this has fallen out of favour for two reasons. 1 was a huge security breach a while back and the poor way it was handled. second is that the built in disk cleanup built into windows these days is good-enough and since its official microsoft theres no chance of it clearing out something needed by the OS

I'll check out some of these programs. Ccleaner has gone to shit though, word of warning. Just feels like malware now.

i never found windirstat that slow tbh. id switch if i used more than once every few months. i know its more a theoretical thing but windirstat should be more accurate as well since it scans the filesystem itself rather than reading the MFT
