take like 14 percent iirc. Have heard at least a few people online suggest that the next time you go to a supermarket or something, you take all your coins and put them in the place where the coins go at the self checkout machine and it will count them all up and pay for your groceries

Just take them to the bank. A lot of banks will either take them or even have a little coinstar like machine that's way cheaper or even free.

I was always too cheap to use them. I have a 5 gallon water jug filled to the brim with money and I would rather sit and count each penny than pay some machine 100 bucks to count it for me.

How much did they used to charge, and what yr was this? I forget. The bank will do this for free? are you sure?

I cashed in my change stash earlier this year to put towards a PS5. I had $563.

No way I'm losing 14% of that to a machine when it only takes a few bucks worth of rollers from the dollar store and an hour of my time.

Cornstarch used to charge 9 percent back in like 2017 I think? I honestly thought they only charged 11 percent last time I went.

Yeah, they'll either do it for free or for a bit cheaper depending on the bank. Or at least most banks do. Mine has a little coinstar machine that only cost like 3% last time I used it.

Some banks might make you roll your coins, but if you ask them if they have anything for loose change specifically a lot of them will have something for a bit cheaper than coinstar at some location.

Not as big as you probably assume.

I live in Canada where we have $1 and $2 coins and no pennies.

I used to find a bunch of really cool rejected coins in a coin star when I worked at a casino.
By the end of my time there, it was one of my favorite parts of the job.

Fun fact, they reject silver coins.

But ya, nothing is stopping you from using them at self checkout.
Just be decent, and don't do it when it's busy.

I work at bank and we only accept rolled coins, usually only banks in big cities will have the machines.

Dumb thing is - we only accept rolled coins, but when we ship out the coins we have to unroll them and dump them all into a big bag because Brinks wont accept anything rolled.

No idea, we asked one of their workers recently after we had to do $5000 in quarters and he didn't know the reason either just what he was told.

Personally I think they just eventually just cut it and dump it all into a machine and they don't want to spend the tedium of unrolling it so they push the task onto us.

I've worked at 2 locations that were in low-crime rate suburbs. We didn't have any glass at these locations and I've been there 2 years and have had no issues.

However in our market, I know of a bomb threat (fake bomb) that happened at one branch and a story of few years ago a guy pulling a knife to a girls neck for money. Which I don't understand because spoilers if you rob the bank we're all just gonna comply because who gives a fuck its not our money.

Oh and heard story of a robbery in boston where they were all held up at gun point and all the tellers got like a $1000 bonus or some shit lol

I just take a few dollars of coins along with the rest of my money when I go to the supermarket. I feel like someone would tell you to stop if you tried dumping a whole jar of coins into the self-checkout machine.

Dunno about America, but at the store I work at no one would care as long as it didn't break the machine, and even then they'd be more angry at the machine than you.

Just waste an afternoon like I did individually counting and rolling up all your coins and taking it to your bank to exchange for dollar dollar bills yo' and such.

What's weird is that the teller lady didn't bother checking them she just took the rolls and added it to my account. I could have put something fake in there like aracade tokens or heck even Canadian coins. Strange but oh well. In any case I went out with $127 to spend and turn back into coins again.

Pretty sure you can get BezosBucks (Amazon credit) which is almost as good as cash if you ask me (even if you just use it to buy a different gift card off their site).

I buy almost everything with credit cards these days though so not having to handle/dispose of coins is just one of the benefits of that.

Last credit union I went to with a coin star, "free" was entirely contingent on you being a member there.

It wasn't a free public service for anyone off the street. (But anyone could come off the street and use it for a percentage. I don't know what it was because I was a member and never had to find out.)

Well obviously. It's a credit union. That much is implied. You can't do anything at a credit union without being a member as far as I'm aware.
