The dinosaur mass extinction happened 66 millions of years ago.

As seen on this graph, a smaller mass extinction happened just before.

the graph clearly shows there weren't more than 60 dinos present at one single time

guess the number of dinos was greatly exaggerated

I still think it's insane that we just up and believe that an asteroid hit earth some millions years ago and caused a crater and wiped all life or whatever. Even if we concede the fact that dinosaur bones weren't planted by the satan devil to trick us, just accepting the evidence that a giant space rock hit earth means that we could get hit at any time, and before half life 3 comes out to boot

You see it on the graph.

Not just before K-Pg boundary. Theres an amount of extinction on par with background noise on any particular year unless youre counting that as a small event following the unusual low spot at about 80 million years ago.

If youre referring to small peak at 150, thats not just before.

Accepting the fragility of what we view as normal life is scary.

The earth has been hit with many many asteroids over Its history, especially early earth because the solar system was a lot younger then. However, most of those hits were pre life earth.

But yes, an extinction level asteroid can hit our planet at any time and there isnt much we can currently do about it. The current theory is that the solar system is relatively safe and clutter free because of the gravitational pull of the gas giants, mostly Jupiter, preventing them from reaching the inner solar system.
