My life remains largely the same whether the president is Obama or Trump or whoever. Im tired of people blaming a single person and their role for all the stupid shit done by this country. Theres so much more that goes on that matters, but nobody pays any attention to.

What do you think of that CE? Has that comment aged well or it a horrible thing to say?

I think it's ignorant to think that the president doesn't affect your life in some way. Millions of women lost access to abortion because he confirmed a conservative court.

That said, it's also important to vote locally because those changes should (ideally) be the ones that affect the most and quickest.

I think they're wrong.

I'd hope that person at least pays attention to local elections at least since those can have very direct impacts

While they're correct that the president is not the be-all end-all for the government, they're still one of the most singularly influential people for all 50 states AND the federal govt.

It's foolish to think they're entirely unimportant. We're talking about the commander-in-chief, chief diplomat, and the voice of the people. Not to mention the sole veto power for legislation in the executive branch, etc.

Just straight up false. You lose worker rights every time a Republican is elected. You lose most federal agency protections. You lose rights in court. Progress that could have occurred is blocked and may never see the light of day again. Crises are handled differently.

Just as an example, Biden's student loan pause was one of the most impactful policies I've ever experienced. It saved me thousands upon thousands of dollars as I moved to a new city. I was able to buy a house, which I was directly told would have been impossible with my loans counting in my monthly debts. My parents would still be living in a tiny, unsanitary house. A Republican president wouldn't have done that. In fact, they actively worked to get a law passed banning the loan pause. That's a practical difference that happened for millions of people.

Idk man, I know a lot of people that have died to an disease that raged uncontrollably through the nation due in part to the lackadaisical mitigation efforts and false information spurred on by the president at the time. It seems like the president actually does have a huge impact on my life.

I remember I got told point blank by two different jobs I couldn't work full time cause Obama care. I don't full blame those that passed the bill as it's greedy ceos that really did that. Just wish politicians would put a little more thought into how things could go wrong with what they are passing.

Democrats would actually be damn good if it wasn't for that they only seem to care about the image that they are trying to help though. Like the idea of taxing the rich more despite knowing damn well they are gonna just hide their money away find other loopholes or increase prices.

I could understand having this stance maybe 10 or 15 years ago.

The US has increasingly transferred power into the executive branch and it wouldn't be surprising if it becomes a dictatorship in the near future. It sucks the system is garbage top to bottom but the top is disproportionately important. This isn't a parliamentary system.

tbh as someone standing on the outside i don't think one man matters that much either with the way their system is set up.

i remember during the obama years that he tried to pass an absolute shit ton of stuff yet most of it never made it past the house, senate or whatever it was that continually cockblocked him.

People always seem to forget the congress as a collective holds more power. It's just a group where as president is a single person.

I mean, he's got a point in the sense that just changing the president won't do fuck all if the house and senate still look the same.

The president is objectively far less important than Congress. Honestly unless theres something they can veto or a Supreme Court vacancy opens up, there doesnt seem to be a lot for them to do domestically.

No, it matters who the president is. The president has a lot of power and what they do absolutely affects your life, maybe just not always in ways that are immediate and easy to recognize.

The president isn't all powerful though. It matters who's in Congress. It matters who's in your state and local governments as well. Your local government especially is making decisions that can have a very direct and immediate impact on you.

Also, when people say things like this there's a good chance that they actually do care who the president is - a lot - and they're just trying to convince other people not to vote because that generally helps Republicans.
