The guide is "Enhanced by PlayOnline.com". Most of the strategies and hidden items are locked behind an online service...for a physical strategy guide.

In a nutshell, you know how a normal players guide would say 'use the Ancient Key to open this door and obtain the Sword of Eternal Power?' The FF9 guide would say 'there's something really cool behind this door! To learn what it is, go to playonline.com/swordofeternalpower.'

It was just an elaborate gimmick to get you to go to an online FAQ. The physical guide itself was a complete lemon.
