What would the alternative be? There needs to be prison reform in America and I believe in rehabilitation but if you commit especially heinous, destructive crimes, you could theoretically be fully rehabilitated and given top mental health treatment yet it would be impossible to reintegrate into society over the reputation had over said crimes.

How do you determine what is heinous enough, and who is impossible to reintegrate

I'm 100% in support of the death penalty with a small addendum: let the condemned pick whatever goofy ahh way they wanna go. If it's deemed that the person should die for the betterment of society and you're gonna do it, why NOT let them choose to be run over with a steamroller?

Japan doesn't even let you know when you're getting executed. One day you just wake up and you're asked to take a walk.

And considering how Japan's justice system works, a lot of those people are probably innocent.

There's also no supply chain concerns or the possibility of random drug cocktails that are untested. Nitrogen is nitrogen.

As long as the death penalty is legal and countries are unwilling to supply the necessary drugs for barely workable lethal injection protocol, there must be alternatives.

Abolishing the death penalty is an alternative.

So are most of the crimes that lead to that sentence. The victims can't get vengeance themselves and there is no law that allows the convicted to be let loose in a cage with the family of the deceased (for five minutes).

Sign the waiver and choose one weapon. If the convicted survives, he goes free. Olmec, lower your temple gates. Lets put five minutes on the clock....GO, GO, GO! (^-^)

Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Utah allow the firing squad, though it's only been used three times, and only in Utah, since the 1970s.

The feeling you get of needing to breathe when you hold your breath / etc is not caused by a lack of oxygen; it's caused by the buildup of CO2. Breathing something other than oxygen still flushes out CO2, so as long as the alternative gas you're breathing isn't toxic in and of itself, you won't suffer. (Nitrogen doesn't kill you when used this way due to toxicity; it just kills you because you're deprived of oxygen. Helium or neon or any other unreactive gas would work the same way.)

Nitrogen wouldn't be so bad. It doesn't bind the way other gases like CO/CO2 do, so apparently there's no feeling of suffocation, you just lose consciousness then BAM, done.

New Hampshire is currently the only state that still allows hanging as capital punishment. Even though NH abolished the death penalty May 30, 2019, it does not apply retroactively, so any person on death row prior to can still be hung.

Either way, I was curious and wondered when the last US execution by hanging took place. Apparently, it was in Delaware in 1996. Incidentally, his was the last of three state-sanctioned hangings that happened in the US in the 1990s, after previously having had none since 1965.

That's just ridiculous. Well, at least he is guilty of something! He could be like one of those other people who were found to be innocent but the courts decided to kill them anyway. There was a case just last year, wasn't there?

Nitrous and nitrogen aren't the same either. Nitrous has a narcotic effect. Nitrogen does nothing directly; the effects are purely from the lack of oxygen. Carbon monoxide is actually toxic.

Carbon monoxide is actually toxic (though from what I understand, if it finishes you off, you still go pretty peacefully - but those who survive a serious enough poisoning with it, will not have a pleasant time).

When there's any chance of protracted suffering it's best to just not do it then. The only truly logical answer is to not do it.

I didn't know juries got to vote on sentencing.

Always thought it was just guilty or not guilty and the judge decided the rest.

Was at court the other day and the judge was super fucking lenient to everybody.

Judge asked a detainee why he felt his bind should be unsecured. Dude said so he could go home judge granted it only after asking how he'd get back to court and dude said he'd walk if he had to (was there on dui)
