One of the most depressing parts of being in your 30s.

I'm sat here trying remain polite to someone who is probably younger than me and my job title says "senior" in it while his says "executive director of companies 1, 2 and 3".

No, but I very much do not think I would own several large business by my mid 30s even if that was my primary goal in life.

I'd be pretty content if I just earned like, 80% more than I earn now.

It's a life changing moment when people above you start becoming younger.

Also when cops who pull you over start looking like they're 16.

I'm a business reporter and I'm stuck talking to millionaires every day with my 60k salary, it's a very weird dynamic

Yeah, it's hard to keep my perspective as well on it and social media doesn't make it any easier. You know you're doing well...but then you see how much better you maybe could be doing.

When a coworker was born after you graduated high school is a gut punch

My dude that is exactly how it works. Once your monthly salary starts getting more than 4 digits in it you lose the ability to do things like rotate PDFs or open zip files.

During my 12 years in IT, I've worked directly with both younger and older people of varying levels of success. I treat them all like people. Their success or point in their life doesn't determine my treatment of them. In my experience, the higher level c-level people often appreciate this treatment instead of acting like you're walking on egg shells around them. At one point, the head of a division within the army had me as his go to tech person when he submitted a ticket because I just treated him like any other dude.

Others success shouldn't depress you, it should drive you to further your own career and success.

Fandoms ads are some of the most intrusive I've dealt with online. Practically adware popup level.

It's all part of a system that is not, and never has been a meritocracy.

Sure, there are instances where hard work and clever thinking gets you ahead, but mostly it's who you know, where you came from, what opportunities you had available, and a lot of good or bad luck on top of that.

Don't beat yourself up as long as you know who you are and what you're capable of. The systems of capitalism and business culture are designed to keep people like you fighting against members of their own class in the hopes that someday you can step on them to get a little bit ahead.

I have a decent salary and am in a position where Im essentially always around extremely wealthy people. Most of them are still much older than me though. One of the guys I work a lot has his own plane and collects a particular model of SUVs as a hobby and is only a year older than me. Billionaires call my personal cell from time to time to talk about things.

Its a good thing though. Those contacts can be super helpful.

The wealthy guys I deal with are typically real estate developers and brokers, and I can tell you that most of their work is meeting people for coffee and lunch and having some staffers hammer out details.

Yeah. Much less work, much harder decisions (generally).

Like "I have 5 minutes to decide what the future of this business will be and say that in the correct way to these people, but after that then I have sweet fuck all to do all day."
