That's the joke.

The Flintstones was a spoof of suburban life in the 1960s. They have goofy, impractical stone age inventions to mirror all the "modern life" inventions of that time.

Having a bird use it's beak as a record player needle... it's silly fun.

Don't they just use it to start the car and then it moves without their feet? I am pretty sure I remember using their feet just to get it going. Like a lawn mower.

I think they also use their feet to brake as well.

I hate to use this as a reason but man, it IS a cartoon lol. I've seen Fred take so many hits to the head and there have been points where people would have died in real life.

Part of the charm of the show was taking actual household items and real technology and using animals to work it so it felt like a modernized form of the stone age.

I am pretty sure this is also how the theory of the Flintstones being post apocalyptic came about.

I hate that theory. It literally takes place in the same exact universe as the Jetsons, except one series takes place in the future and the other one takes place in the past. The Jetsons have literally visited bedrock, and vice versa, due to time machine shenanigans.

They had something similar to that effect on The Jetsons Meet The Flintstones. The suggestion made was to keep their feet off the ground while the car was in motion.

Carpooling was probably also less stressful too. Imagine driving on your own to work compared to bringing your colleagues to work with you...or dropping your partner at work and then going to your own job and realizing how much more work you have to put into it lol.
