It was lucky Peach sent Mario that invitation for cake when she did because who knows how long it may have taken the plumber to come looking.

Not really I feel like Mario is at Peach's castle every fucking day and that was just one excuse to be there like an hour earlier than he normally would have.

Does he even have a place to live outside the castle? I'm not a huge Mario buff, but I don't recall seeing him have a home anywhere except maybe his parent's place in Yoshi's island iirc.

The letter was just to let him know about the cake. He was going to go there anyway.

Good thing there was a cameraman Lakitu around to chronicle the entire affair for an upcoming documentary on troubles in the Mushroom Kingdom.

Thing is, the cake doesn't exist until after the credits. Peach outright tells her Toad servants to help her bake it for Mario after she's rescued.

The cake letter just screams "trap" to me in hindsight. Either Bowser forced Peach to write it against her will in order to lure Mario in to die, or he got one of his minions to write it (and make it seem like it was her doing, handwriting and all) for the same purpose.

So the cake was originally a lie?

They show his house in Super Mario RPG. He lives really close to the Mushroom Kingdom.

Super Mario 64 was the game that convinced Gabe Newell to quit Microsoft and start Valve Software.

I was always under the impression that Bowser forced Peach to send that letter as a way to goad Mario into showing up.

Sure, it was stupid on Bowser's part, but I kinda feel like his rivalry with the plumber causes him to not always make the smartest decisions.

This reminds me of a time when the game/console was still somewhat new and they had a demo kiosk down at our local Sears. Like many such demos probably are, it was programmed to hard reset every few minutes as a cue to let another person in waiting have a turn.

Already having played through the game before, I took a turn at it and managed to rush my way to getting a star before it reset, which allowed me to save the game and not have to restart it from the very beginning (which has a long unskippable intro sequence). The trick was not to go after the King Bob-omb star because that took up way too much time; the Chain Chomp star is much quicker. Doing that broke open the game a little bit because of the time gained from not having to watch the intro, allowing access to other stars that I otherwise wouldn't have had time to reach (unless maybe if I were some pro speedrunner or something, which I'm definitely not).

I had fun dealing with the forced resets as a sort of challenge mode, picking away at the game a star or two at a time and gaining a small audience until eventually the parents were done shopping and wanted to leave, so I had to leave as well.
