Quite the hurdle.

I'm more familiar with the weiqui/go/baduk tournament circuit, and those guys can make a boatload of money too. Probably similar in that they not only get prize money, but also appearance fees and for merely lending their name to a tutoring school.

But you have to be a quick thinker. Chess grandmasters play with a timer (think they have a 5 minute time limit per game to prevent stalling).
Edit: I'm wrong, it's 90 minutes for first 40 moves, then a max of 30 minutes for the remainder of the game.

You can make a lot of money in a ton of different fields if you are one of the best in the world at what you do

Honestly it was sorta difficult to earn money if you're not the top 3 player, but a lot more people have it as a viable career now cuz of streaming and good online infrastructure

And all you have to do is get started dedicating a massive chunk of your life to it long before you're old enough to have any idea what you're trying to get yourself into. Shame I didn't think of that when I was 5.
