I seem to recall a few years back being anti Zionist was conflated with being anti Semitic and there is definitely overlap between some people who use the term as a shield to hide behind ala Im not anti Jew Im anti Zionist.

Ive always avoided it in conversation but Ive seen it used a lot in recent topics on the Israel / Hamas war.

Whats the current feeling on its use?

No, Zionist and Zionism are not offensive words.

I was raised Jewish, atheist now, and I'm anti zionist. I'm sick of Israel saying every form of criticism against them is antisemitism.

I can see why people think that's a vital distinction to make.

It describes not a religion but a worldview, and its adherents used to be proud to call themselves that.

In modern times zionism usually refers to illegal Jewish settlements on Palestinian land endorsed and committed by the state of Israel.

Mostly this, but with the caveat that both terms are still easy dogwhistles so still pays to be wary of who you say it around and who you hear it from.

Zionist used to mean advocacy for creation of a Jewish state. Now that one exists, Zionism means fanatical support of that state's actions.

Anti-zionism could mean the dissolution of a major apartheid state or simply ending that apartheid system and changing the constitution of Israel to not have it baked in.

Criticism of Israel's policies is often attributed as anti-zionism which is then often conflated with antisemitism. However, it is the conflating of all Jews with the government of Israel that is antisemitic.

One of the most heavily-referenced anti-Semitic text is called Protocols of the elders of Zion.

If you dont think Zionist is ever used as a dog whistle for Jews, youre really naive.

Yeah definitely. Its annoying when words get corrupted by certain groups to undermine their originally meaning. BLM and Woke come to mind. Im with you. I actively try and avoid words that are likely to lead to emotional responses rather than logical ones.

No for reasons already given but it's still not a term I'd ever feel comfortable using

Zionism is more of a political movement than anything. I dont think its grounded in religious thinking. Theres more orthodox sects within Judaism that argue against the establishment of a state for a Jews, citing parts of Torah. But theyre the minority AFAIK.

there have been anti-semitists throughout history who have incorporated it into their bigoted rhetoric.

Preach tzedeka, not zionism

Zionism by definition is a broad term that is often used to refer to very specific stances.

It can be used offensively, it usually isn't.

Its a word that can heavily change its meaning depending on the context its used in.

So it may be better to avoid using it all together.
