The regional manager of a building material company calls me and likes my resume. He just wanted to let me know how the application process goes but instead we talked for over 90 minutes. He was impressed by my passion and knowledge of his company so he said "consider this your phone interview" and he told me their company recruiter would contact me soon and schedule my computer assessment.

I talked to the recruiter, and she liked me and said I passed the assessment, I had a in-person interview scheduled for the following week with another middle manager higher up than the first guy who called me.

I spend $300 on new clothes, drove across Atlanta in rush hour, and made it to the interview at the Hilton where the manager was staying. I couldn't imagine a better interview. They only asked 2 of what I would call "industry standard" interview questions. The rest of the hour+ time was just talking about the company and the industry and how qualified I was.

Oh, which, by the way, on paper I was slightly overqualified but not unusual. I have a BBA and 15 years of relevant work experience. The job requirements were an associates degree and 2-3 years of experience. They patted me on the back and shook my hand as I was leaving, and promised I would hear back soon.

A week passes... then I get an extremely generic auto-generated email from the company saying they found another candidate but please keep checking and thank you for your interest.

Is this what all job hunts are like now? I've been in my current dead end job for so long I must be out of the loop.
