A former Memphis police officer changed his plea to guilty Thursday in the fatal beating of Tyre Nichols, becoming the first of five officers charged to reverse course.

Desmond Mills Jr. entered his plea during a hearing at the Memphis federal courthouse as part of a larger agreement to settle charges in state court as well. It wasnt immediately clear how the four other officers planned to respond and specifically whether they would follow suit. Their attorneys declined to comment on Mills guilty plea.

Mills pleaded guilty to federal charges of excessive force and obstruction of justice on Thursday and has agreed to plead guilty to related state charges. Prosecutors are recommending a 15-year sentence for the former officer, although the final sentencing decision rests with the judge.

Was this the one where the police lied about it and shielded their body cams, but there was some camera in the area that caught them doing it?

I'm not sure if they ever lied about it. Their body cams definitely caught a lot of the beating. It was the one where it was a major event when they were going to release the footage because they were expecting the city to riot because it was so bad.

Oh yeah, I remember that. I remember thinking it was weird that 1) the police were trying to preempt this so much and 2) even other police departments in other cities/states were trying to preempt it.
