the giants and dodgers are the only teams i see him signing with. dodgers seemed to be cutting payroll last offseason specifically to get ready for this. giants whiffed on judge and correa so they want to make a big splash and the gm is obviously on the hot seat.

maybe the mets? even though they are in a soft rebuild. don't see yankees, phillies, or padres (esp with this new being poor story dropping) doing it since they all have too many huge deals on the books already and i don't think their owners will be cool with cohen-esque luxury tax penalties.

nelson cruz has decided to retire. wasnt too hot lately so not unexpected. however he does retire with 399 homers which stings a little.

Like you, I've always thought it was going to be the Dodgers. Your reasoning for the Giants makes sense too.

I do think the Mets will make Ohtani an offer because they'd be crazy not to. But I think, like many teams, Yamamoto is going to be the guy they really, really want. And if the Mets want him as badly as I think, it will be tough to match them.

I'm all for it. I'm a Yankees fan, but I follow the Mets just as much, and I've been to Citi Field more times than I've been to old and new Yankee Stadium combined.

i didn't know he did that. i know he was sent to the complex because he was just doing that poorly in the majors and it is a low stakes developmental league where they were just telling him to try and pound the strike zone to get his groove back or w/e

josh bell opts in to stay with the marlins. almost certainly being traded at the deadline.

padres also decline the options of pitchers michael wacha and nick martinez. they have no pitching lol. they're gonna trade soto for like four pitchers.

and then cubs randomly fire david ross and hire craig counsell from their rivals. counsell is being paid over 8m per year - largest salary for a manager ever, beating joe torre when he was with the yankees.

the cubs supposedly tried to get pete alonso at the deadline. now they make a huge hire here. are they gonna be in the ohtani sweepstakes???

Cubs are almost certainly going to be in on some big players with that move. Really must suck to be a Brewers fan. Another franchise that deserves so much better.

I really expected Counsell to sign with the Mets. Hopefully Mendoza ends up being a good one though.

all of these players received a qualifying offer which is a 1 year 20.3m deal. whoever signs them might have to give up a pick and the team that loses them will receive a comp pick. i'm not sure how the compensation works but i expect every single one of these guys is getting paid 100m except for maybe hader which would mean 1st rounder maybe? not going to look this up

It's dependent on whether the team was over the CBT the previous year, was a revenue-sharing recipient, or neither of the two. Seems dumb and complicated.

i mean the whole mets thing was they were going to hire david stearns from the brewers and then bring over counsell who is widely regarded as an S tier manager

now theyre hiring a first time guy who worked under aaron boone - a guy hired with no experience managing at all ever - for a team that went through coaching changes mid year and has all sorts of drama around how the team is run and whatnot. i dunno. i would have wanted a veteran presence with front office experience/synergy who can keep things stable like counsell, melvin, etc

none of this will really matter though if the mets reshape their r&d i guess. they really improved the farm and cohen's willingness to spend should keep them competitive once things start rolling.

apparently there is a stomach bug circulating at the GM meetings. everyone having diarrhea.

he got pretty lucky with the FIP-ERA difference but ultimately ERA is what matters. i'd have voted for him too. if you throw nasty as hell stuff that no one can actually hit to score runs it doesn't matter if you walk a ton of dudes.

i'm okay with the Cy going to pitchers with unimpressive innings totals if they are well and truly dominant in them (ie Corbin Burnes in '21)

Snell does not meet that qualification at all. he was 20th in SIERA and in general was just very fortunate with runners on base, hence his shiny ERA
