Like, there are games that have a ton of spectacle that are more interesting to watch than play. Dark Souls is the opposite. There is a lot of tension you can only understand by playing.

The gameplay in the Dark Souls games seems to be focused mostly on combat. The combat is boring. That's basically why the franchise is boring.

People love a challenge. There's a tension you can't get anywhere else when you're facing down a challenge armed purely with your skills, knowing that the only thing between you and progress is "getting gud", with no cheap exploit, or "hit the green soot with the green ability" or "game plays itself" mode to save you. And when you beat that challenge, after being forced to meticolously study and hone it all by yourself, there's an amazing rush.
That's not to say Souls games are the only ones that do this, nor are they even the best at it. The "no cheap exploit" part isn't necessarily true. But its so synonymous with Souls because its so uncompromising about it. There's no railroaded tutorial teaching you mechanics one by one like a baby, there's no "cinematic climbing" or walking simulator sections, the game just thrusts you into it and isn't ashamed to do so. --- Dokkan ID: 2365415872 ...
