I want to create a likable character, but he has a problem with being obsessive over various things. One of his habits is to keep a photo of his ex-girlfriend (either on his phone or in his living room). However, the photo also shows the guy she cheated on him with. He uses that photo as a motivation to work out. This is not supposed to be a positive trait. But is it too negative?

As with all of these things, it depends how you handle it.

It doesn't have to be creepy. There's even a comic side to it.

I actually worked with a dude at my old job who did this. He was a cop, and was like 320 pounds. His wife left him for a younger dude who was buff and fit. He put up a picture of the two of them in his room, quit his job as a cop, became a machinist, and started working out 3 hours a day. When I asked him he he lost all the weight in like a 6 month period he told me "work out 3 hours a day and take a bunch of yellowjackets".

Mind you this was 2002 so yellowjackets back then were essentially just speed, so he's probably dead now from the damage to his heart.

What does this have to do with 'modern' feminism? Males competing over a female is a hardly a new phenomenon for the animal kingdom.

Seems like that chip on your shoulder is so large that it obscures your vision.

No. The fact that TC is nervous about writing a fictional character who is human, imperfect, and relatable -- because ill-intentioned modern feminists have hijacked the word "creep" in a successful attempt to make lonely, depressed men feel guilty and ashamed about everything they do.

It's very reminiscent of this headline that I screenshotted here. Where this scientist was announcing the biggest achievement of his life, and for a few weeks he didn't want to show his face because feminists were slapping him around for wearing that shirt. The whole Internet had to come out in support for him to assure him he didn't do anything wrong, THEN he was able to smile and talk about his science stuff confidently again. He got lucky. Not every male who has fallen victim to this sort of BS gets to receive the support this scientist did, and many go on to live their lives thinking they're gross, repulsive people for harmless, miniscule things they've done.

This could've been copied and pasted from an incel subreddit back when those were still around.

Case in point. You can't talk about the harm that new-wave feminism is causing without being labeled as an "incel." Even women can't sympathize with men who are having a hard time in the dating world or wrongfully accused of being "creeps" without being called a "pick me girl." So I'll repeat: modern feminism has you all by the balls.

I don't think feminists needed to convince anyone that keeping a photograph of your girlfriend's boyfriend in your wallet may be presented by an author as 'creepy'.

I refer once more to that chip.

K, whatever. I'll close with this statement. You're saying I have a chip, and earlier, a guy used the word "incel" regarding my post. But I'm actually passionate about this for the exact OPPOSITE reason. You won't believe me, but for the past two years, I've been getting more female attention than I ever have before. It feels great. You know what I've been doing different? I stopped giving a fuck what society says is "creepy", I break all the rules that modern feminism tries to shame men for, I approach women and practice my social skills, undaunted by the fact that two years ago I would have felt "creepy" for it. So I speak passionately about this thing regularly, because I want other men who are depressed and in the same trap that I used to be in to realize they don't have to be. Women will respect you more if you stop thinking courtship is harassment, even though it's feminism telling men that it's not okay.

I reread the OP and I don't understand how you're getting "feminism" from "is it weird to write a character who's obsessed with his ex-girlfriend". Chill out, homie. Get some fresh air, have a cup of coffee or something.

That was horrible shirt to wear, but he should not been treated that bad for it.
