Have any of your coworkers taken the upcoming elections more seriously? I remember you telling us that they were rather blah about Youngkin's election back then.

Already got my absentee ballot weeks ago in Idaho and dropped it off in the drop box. Idahovote has my ballot accepted so my job is done.

Sadly there was only one race to vote on this off year and it was city council positions. Having to vote for 3 of the 8 candidates running for the 3 open seats. Very little information on each of the candidate to work with on choosing who to vote, but I did made sure to not vote for two of the candidates who had some MAGA-like comments at the debate and on Facebook.

Some people don't really feel invested in the candidates running and to place a vote in an election where you don't stand behind any candidate wouldn't be honoring one's personal values. Voting as a practice should be one of commitment, at least that's how I always hope it would (these days a lot of voting seems more like it's done to stick it to the opposition rather than advocate for a platform you yourself stand behind).

Personally I study the candidates running, particularly in local races, and I don't place a vote in that race if I don't see myself agreeing with the choices (especially if the one I did vote for never made it out of a primary or similar selection process so you're just left with "as good as you'll get").

The problem with this mentality is that someone is going to win the election and they are going to be part of the government. If elections were voided because people didn't vote, then it makes sense to not vote, but the fact is that not voting just makes it easier for the worse person to win. Whether they win with one vote or a million, they have the same power.

I do recognize that but what is voting if not something you're doing for yourself? I just hate voting in a way that is simply to prevent things from getting worse. It's so damn hollow. Might as well move somewhere else where the political landscape is less shitty if that's all you've got left in the tank.

Teddy started the idea that America should be the world police. He did some good stuff with trust busting and unions but today he'd be a neocon for sure. Not a Democrat.

Nah, plenty of Dems are fine with the US being the world police, too. And you're massively underselling trust busting, union support, pure food and drugs, conservation efforts, regulations on businesses (especially railroads), the Square Deal, etc. He literally was a leader of the Progressive movement and founded the Progressive Party due to how conservative Taft and the GOP.

This is all bedrock modern Democratic Party affair, and straight-up antithetical anything GOP related today.

This kind of rhetoric does not help. Try, "Vote for whomever best aligns with your interests and concerns, and democrats will do their best to be that group."

Because when you tell people they have no choice, a good number of people will demonstrate that they do indeed have a choice, and it's one you don't want them taking.
