Even though the Otacon Ending is non-canon I think it's better and should be done on your first playthrough.

True, but in that version there's no reload animation, and I loved leaving those last tracer bullets on the Famas before popping the bandana on, and destroy everything.

Yeah, it depends on whether you submit to the torture or not. Beating the torture gets you the Meryl ending, submitting gets you the Otacon ending

the only good parts concerning Otacon in MGS2, IMO, took place in the beginning of the game, when he tried to tell you proverbs, like Mei Ling, and the handshake.

besides that, the stepmom thing, and the stuff with EE (another poorly written character) really dragged down his character.

Am I alone in thinking that the bosses dwindled in quality with every main installment?

MGS1- PHENOMENAL characters with interesting backgrounds and goals. Yes even Decoy Octopus.

MGS2 - Remember MGS1 FoxHound? Well, here's basically another version of them.

MGS3 - Were sooooo one-dimensional and very bland in terms of backstory and delivery. The End bossfight is the GOAT, though, ngl.

MGS4 - Are you kidding? Literally models wearing copy and paste outfits, with only fucking Drebin telling you their half-assed backstory instead of them through the CODEC.

100% agree. At least in MGS2's case there's an in-universe reason for it. They felt familiar because everything was meant to feel familiar by design.

MGS3 on the other hand only has them because it's "the formula" by now. One of few blights on an otherwise A+ game.
MGS4 I haven't played but from what I've heard the BB Corps are exactly as you say.

Honestly they were the only part of MGS4 I didn't love. They felt so lazy and tacked-on just because the game needed a Foxhound-esque group of bosses to fight. They had good enough gimmicks when it came to actually fighting them, but on subsequent replays, their stories were the only codec calls/cutscenes I skipped.

"Creepypasta story time" was never the right way to share their stories. All four of them were the same: "She was super beautiful but something bad happened and she killlled peoplleeee"

The only way to make them better was to completely revamp their stories and deliver them organically throughout the game. Maybe it would have been better if they didn't even explain the B&B origins. Giving them backstories and delivering the information via Drebin Books on Tape just wasn't the right call.

At the time MGS4 came out, I was a teenager who was part of a MGS RP forum with what were mostly other teenagers. The B&B Corps backstories would have fit right in. The part that really got me was them shoehorning their respective animals into their backstories.

Like Laughing Octopus is called Octopus because she has mech tentacles. We don't need Drebin to tell us that her hometown ate a lot of octopus.
