Theres no shame in it but I wouldnt want to do it. I did it while I was studying for my undergraduate degree, but Id already lived on my own for six years before that, so found it very hard.

Im fortunate enough to not need to and Im very glad for that, but I totally understand that some people dont have much choice and some people even prefer it.

I would never judge anyone but only looking at myself it was only acceptable in my early 20s while I was in the military. Basically college age. Anything after that felt too old for me.

But I also thought living at home past 18 was too old. I moved out my senior year of high school when I was 17 because I wanted independence.

Everyone is different though.

Its not an age thing for me. I just like the privacy and drama free. I would rent a one bedroom apartment for myself and pay twice as much vs living with roommates.

You dont need two incomes to afford somewhere to live. It helps though, sure.

Living with a roommate is a minefield unless they're super reliable. They could stop paying their share after one month and you're stuck with them until the end of one-year lease.

I get that its hard, but honestly if you haven't gotten your shit together by the time you hit 40 I am a bit concerned for you.

I have some friends in their extremely early thirties who have roommates with other friends of ours to save for house down-payments, and that totally seems normal to me. But for some reason, if you have peers whose kid's are about to be off to college and you're still living with roommates in order to scrape by, it makes me kind of sad.

if you haven't gotten your s*** together

How can you look out the window in 2023 at reality and think that someone's economic hardship is somehow them "not getting their shit together" instead of much larger, systemic problems at play?

Home ownership is going to be a myth for anyone born after 2010, and it's hard enough today for anyone born after even... shit... 1990?

Get out of here with that kind of victim blaming.

I mean, that's obviously a different circumstance. It's pretty much a horseshoe, like how acceptable is it to wear diapers. Makes sense when you're really young or really old, but it's weird for anyone without extenuating circumstances in the middle of your life.

While I agree with your general sentiment that its harder than it was for previous generations, you dont need to own a home in order to not live with room mates.

Man, I bought a house at 26 with no degree. And I'm still not even 30, so it was fairly recent. My sister is close to doing the same, she also didn't end up with a degree. It's easy to throw up your hands and claim something is impossible without actually trying to accomplish it.

I don't know man, no offense but I'm pretty sure if you went on a date at 45 years old and told someone you live in an apartment with roommates or still live with your parents, I'm pretty sure 9/10 times you're going to get a similar reaction.

Good for you. For millions of people it simply doesnt go this way. In my case its been very rare for an employer to actually hire me despite the fact on paper I am perfectly employable. Most people dont walk out of school straight into a nice white collar job no matter how much we were lied to otherwise.
