Major career accomplishment this upcoming summer. Wanting to give him an expensive watch in the $1-1.5k range....budget isn't super strict but it's approximate.

I know watch brands but I don't know a lot of details. He wears watches but will never buy an expensive one for himself.

A nice brand that can be had in the 1-1.5K range is Oris.

However, if you want people to notice the watch, no non watch person is going to notice an Oris.

Though I have never owned an Oris to say. If that's your budget a high end Seiko would probably be nice(not Grand Seiko which is generally a thousand or two more than the budget listed).

You can get a very nice Seiko Prospex for less than the price you mentioned. If you feel you must spend a lot of money, there's always Grand Seiko.

Yup, came in to recommend Seiko too. They have some nice watches in that price range.

Currently wearing a SARA015 (SJE073) and it's almost on the level of Grand Seiko regarding it's finishing and dial. It's a bit outside the listed budget, but I'm just mentioning it since Seiko often goes hard for a fair price.

People spend more on things I'd consider dumb, but that's ok. We all have different interests. I don't expect you to get it if you're not a watch person, but I'm happy with it. Brings a smile to my face when I examine all the different details of the watch.

I will say mechanical watches get expensive fast, and diminishing returns happen quickly. There's something in every price range, though.
