Someone on CE once told me that in the real world, employers dont care what your degree is in as long as you have one

This comment has lived rent free in my head ever since

As someone with 2 engineering degrees and had trouble getting work with my current employer when I had just 1 engineering degree that doesnt make sense. At my agency 100% of engineers have engineering degrees. Youre not even allowed to apply to the job without an engineering no degree. Maybe 5% have a slightly different engineering degree (mechanical instead of civil for example)

Is what this person told me true? Am I just not living in the real world?

Probably it depends entirely on what your job is. An engineering agency is hopefully going to look askance at someone wanting to construct a water desalinization plant with a degree in "Lesser Known Albanian Dance Techniques", but a HR firm looking for some schmuck to filter resumes may be less picky.
