The writers have openly and loudly stated that they dislike the source material, including the books they're adapting and the games.
Thus, they're perfectly fine disrespecting it because they can make it better. Narrator: They can't. I have no idea why on earth Netflix would assign writers who hate the source material to adapt the series, but here we are. --- Haven't had a good sig idea since 2006 ... Copied to Clipboard!

A few factors.
The source material is just okay. The first book is a neat anthology kinda thing but once it gets past that it's pretty generic The games are better than the books but they can't reference anything from the games The showrunners don't seem to overly care about the source material Netflix are hit and miss in general and don't compare to a company like HBO More adaptations are bad than good If anything it's unusual when these are good --- A Fallen Mascot ...
