The man incited a fucking riot/coup and has repeatedly publically wished or requested harm on people he dislikes. He is a clear and obvious danger to the Judge and court staff if his speech is not restricted let alone the jury/witness tampering considerations.

Just because Trump is shit doesnt mean he shouldnt get the same rights as anyone else. Dont give him or his followers any ammo to say anything was unfair once all is said and done.

ALCU are pretty much no-limits defenders of free speech, no matter what that speech is or which side it's for. This is completely in line with what anyone would expect from them.

He has already been treated with kid gloves for much of his legal woes due to being a former president and presidential candidate.

Defending rights is admirable but it can reach a reckless level. This isn't defending a regular murderer. Its defending a man who tried to topple our Democracy over a very reasonable precaution against a man who has proven reckless and willing in wielding his massive platform to incite criminal and violent acts.

He is the single worst criminal in our history outside of the Confederate leadership.

Many rights are not and cannot be unlimited. Limitless rights by their very nature in a large society actually decrease the overall ability for people to exercise their rights. When you tolerate racism, bigotry and threats it inevtiably drives certian groups into a lesser status and enables discriminatory laws.

Many times the ACLU defending criminals are in the right. But this is a massive deeply irresponsible miss.

Unfortunately, the paradox is advantageous to the far right. They can cry "censorship" whenever anybody tries to curtail their activities.

Judge Chutkan has already literally said anybody else in Trump's shoes and doing what he's done would already be held in custody.

The man flat-out threatens the safety and lives of people for holding him accountable.

This squeamish attitude coddling fascists who instigate violence against the law only serves the interests of fascists.

Also there are plenty of defendants who have gotten gag orders, has the ACLU come to their defense or is it just because it's Trump and high profile?

That being said, there are a load of people in nearby Skokie and West Ridge still peeved at the ACLU for defending literal Illinois Nazis.

Part of the thing about the ACLU is they will defend anyone who needs it, even if it's people who generally hate the ACLU. The fact that most of the time they are defending minorities, and people on the left just shows who needs it more.

I sure hope we all appreciate the irony of the ACLU defending the person who is the greatest threat to them and everything they stand for

They will defend anyone, which is why conservatives hate them. In conservative eyes you should only defend them and people they like.

They're specifically arguing that the gag order is vague and overly broad. It's the wording they're opposed to in this case. For example, does "targeting" mean threatening or does it mean merely criticizing?

The ACLU is proving itself to be blissfully ignorant of Popper's Tolerance Paradox.
