No one gives a shit about Stanley Ipkiss. The first movie didn't succeed because of the character, it succeeded because of Jim Carrey. And they offered him the role in the sequel but he didn't want to do it.

Recast Stanley Ipkiss with pretty much anyone else and it fails. So you're right back where you started anyway.

And it's not like Stanley was even the main character of the comics. He was actually the villain of the first story arc and then died. So the idea of having different people wear the mask wasn't even a new idea for the sequel movie. It could have worked, if done correctly.

What really killed the second movie was a) Jamie Kennedy, and b) the stupid baby.

Write a better script, with a more sympathetic main character (and cast a better actor to play them), and have it focus more on their internal struggle more than just the slapstick sight gags, and people probably would have liked it. They could have even - oh, I don't know - just adapted one of the actual comic storylines. There were like six other stories they could have used, pretty much all of which were better than the original story they wrote for the sequel film.
