I wasnt kicked out and nothing was wrong with my home life but I yearned for independence and more freedom. I moved out at 17 my senior year of high school. And after graduation I left for the military. Have been on my own ever since.

But it was understood if I was to stay home Id start paying rent at 18.

I stayed there until I was 22 or so. They pushed me to have a job, but I never paid rent or anything.

I'm 42 years old.
The topic was never broached and I still live with my parents rent free to this day.

Your poll options are a bit too specific. I did move out on my own after a few years, but my mom never actually brought it up and never charged me rent.

I wasnt kicked out but I liked having independence. I started college at 17, stayed at my parents over the summer after freshman and sophomore year and then when I started junior year at age 19 I got my first apartment and never looked back

my sisters lived with my parents into their early 20s rent free but that wasnt for me

My parents never kicked me out, but Ive been living away since college.

I started supporting myself after graduating, but my parents still helped me pay for a car (70%) and paid almost 50% of the value of my apartment.

To this day I still shamelessly visit my parents on weekends and ask my mother to do my laundry.

I went straight to undergrad out of state, and then from there to grad school also (way) out of state. I did live at home for a few months between grad school and my current job but my room was still there unchanged.

An obvious option is missing. I just moved out and there was no pressure to do so.

I went to college too far away to live at home. They paid for my housing during that time. Then I got a job out of college even further away and I paid my own rent.

In my case I was giving my mom money from my job at 16 because she was disabled. She died 1 year after being awarded Social Security Disability. That took her 5 or 6 years of fighting without any income but child support.

I stayed at home for a year and went to college.

I then moved out to other family and went to college elsewhere.

Then I wanted to move back home but my mom said "If you want to move back in, you need to go to school and get a job"

So I went and joined the Army lol

My mom was an alcoholic who graduated to crack, and my dad was a life-long convict. I had my own place at 17. By all accounts, I should be another statistic.

This. I went to a local college and stayed home as a freshman, then got a job that summer and moved into the dorms.

37, still live with parents. Know plenty of even older people who still do. Its partly cultural in my country and partly a fucked housing market. Waiting lists can be 15+ years and immigrants get first dibs.
