When Three Days Grace switched from Adam Gontier to Matt Walst I hated it. But I haven't listened to TDG in years so I decided to give their first single after Adam another shot. I honestly thought "Maybe I'm overreacting."

But nah. It's terrible.

Their first single after replacing Adam was I Am Machine. Which, alright, a bit on the nose with the title and it's very evident what the meaning is right off that bat. But that can be expected, it's a song.

The lyrics are awful. They're dull, boring, and straight up...they feel factory produced. Like someone was trying to write it with a genre in mind rather than something with...idk, what would the word be? Feeling? It lacks a human touch, and feels, ironically, robotic. It's meant to appeal to the masses rather than being a song that has meaning and feeling. Which is a big part of what I liked about TDG when I first started listening.

It was really only years later that I learned the music was written by Adam Gontier who put his personal experiences and his own pain into the music he wrote. For example, arguably one of their biggest bits was I Hate Everything About You.

The song was written with Adam's personal pain and dealings with drugs and abuse. Maybe I'm being a bit dramatic, but you can feel it in his voice, and in the lyrics by themselves. It's very emotional, and quite strong in terms of lyrical quality with honestly Adam's very dynamic voice...it is just really good.

There's a stark difference in quality that I just can't get over. I like their music, their instrumentals, but the vocals and lyrics of new TDG music just doesn't stick with me the same way.

Idk, am I alone in feeling this way?

For posterity purposes, I haven't given a listen to Adam's other band. I plan to, but I have to force myself to listen to music.

I remember seeing them play Drown live and I thought it was a cover (I'd been familiar with several of their songs from checking them out an impressionable age in like 2003/4) because it came across as a much better written song than most their stuff. I can't believe they were a headliner though. Late 00's rock radio festivals were a bit of a joke with some of those lineups..

I'm not really much of a Three Days Grace fan, but "I Am Machine" is one of their few songs that I enjoy
