First came Nintendo of Japan, now Europe and people are expecting Nintendo of America to follow suit. There's been some doom and gloom among competitive smash players.

I gotta hand it to the competitive scene for smash. Nintendo constantly shits on them over and over again but they still play smash because they love it, even though they never get the actual support they deserve. Capcom and Arcs Systems go out of their way to help out the competitive scene for their fighters with big prize pools and everything. Nintendo Smash tournament first prize was literally a golden gamecube controller with a smash logo on it.

Eh, most of this seems reasonable. Not being able to use relevant characters to promote a tournament is definitely a bit much, but let's be honest, the most contemptuous terms are definitely the ones that basically disallow mods & roms, & forbid this from ever becoming a "for profit" venue.

Nintendo must be terrified of how they'll lose control of smash the moment they remaster melee or release it on the virtual console.

I can see not promoting that this is an official Nintendo event or using Nintendo characters to advertise, but how can they really legally stop anyone from holding a tournament? I just don't get it. Is this a terms of use thing they're trying to enforce? Does it really break copyright to stream matches?

Neither of which is likely to ever happen. Like every Mario Kart that isn't Double Dash, there's little practical reason for Nintendo to remaster a specific Smash game, & Nintendo has never directly put any Gamecube game on their digital services, so far; the Wii U eShop had Wii games, but still no GC.

They can't legally stop a tournament from happening but they can legally stop marketing and broadcasting of that tournament.

Also, fuck the competitive Smash community. I can't blame Nintendo for not wanting anything to do with a bunch of pedos.

Evo doesn't qualify as a community tournament because of the size. They would need to get a contract. They've tried in the past and decided they're better off without it.

Need to disclose expenses, cap on prizes, & no sponsors means Nintendo tournaments aren't a road to big money. No money means less players interested & less funding to support those who do show up.

You're overstating how much of an impact a Melee rerelease will have in the grand scheme of things. The vast majority of players especially casuals are not going to buy or invest in Melee when Ultimate or the next Smash game--both of which have and will have much more content in them--are around.

If it's not going to be the switch, then the switch 2 would be the time to release GameCube games.

If Nintendo wants to offset by a couple generations, that's fine, but they'll have to do it eventually. There's no way they can vault this game until the end of time.

The Wii U had Wii & DS games. I've always suspected the GC had something to do with no other Nintendo system having analog triggers, even though Luigi's Mansion & Super Mario Sunshine are probably the only games where they truly matter (& have versions without it anyway), but whatever the reason, it's definitely more than "offset", especially when the GC is currently 3 generations from the Switch.

Developers big & small, have been trying to topple/clone Nintendo's flagship IPs for years. Sonic is by far the most successful attempt, to date. For Smash specifically, the IP breadth alone, makes the barrier to entry extremely high; Warner Bros, Sony, & Nickelodeon have all tried, & none have succeeded. I suppose Disney has never attempted a Smash clone, but can you seriously see Disney allowing Aladdin to smash Mickey's face in, in a semi serious tone?

i haven't looked into this and don't know what this means, but 99% of tournaments have not been nintendo sponsored. in fact they're notable for not sponsoring tournaments or supporting the smash community, so why does nintendo have any guidelines at all, and why does anyone care about them?
