That is so weird. And Tom cruise must be fuming because the year before he basically beat all the super hero movies and had a higher box office than them, beating out mcu with tg 2.

Don't get me wrong, mi 6 was a great way to end the series, and it was very presumptuous of them to automatically make this movie a 2-parter like avengers 3/3.5 but still.

I'm just shocked so few went to see it. It must have barely made back its budget, let alone grossed a profit

First I'm hearing of this movie.

It seemed like the public just wasn't interested in the big Hollywood blockbuster this year. Regardless if it was a good movie or a bad one.

Some More News recently did an episode on this very topic, and how most movies "flop" at the box office, but always made it back via other revenue streams like rentals.

Now... even Dead Reckoning, which made much money, isn't deemed (by execs and producers) to have made enough.

It being called part one turned me off

Could it be because it wasn't released in China? Is that where the missing half billion comes from?

Blatantly being a part one probably turned people off and it went up against not one, not two, but three movies that all over performed expectations, two of which combined into a legitimate cultural phenomenon.

It was also a pretty drastic step down in quality on almost every front compared to Fallout.

I've seen 2 Mission Impossibles, the first 2, maybe 3... I'm not even sure. I've seen all the Fast and Furious since all of those movies are good.

I thought idiots were going to make a point of seeing it to own the libs, or something.

It released during Barbieheimer

I was the same and wondered why they were even making more of those. Watched all of them in the past year and the newer movies blow the first 3 out of the water. Far superior movies in literally every single way they could be

Again it and other movies like that Dune movie (which I still haven't seen) were super presumptuous in calling their movies part 1 and 2, and I'll wait until the second part is out before watching, but surely that wasn't the reason the masses didn't go see it?

I think people were claiming it would be the biggest movie of the summer, before it came out

It still grossed over half a billion dollars even given the release timing. Its budget was just way too high.

Yeah the part one did not work for me...

TBH there are only like 2 really good MI movies the rest are either just fine or bad...

Top Gun was ass so I skipped Toms next movie

if it was either of those movies, it was probably Top Gun (idk since I haven't seen it), since I can't remember any negative press around any of the Mission Impossibles.

at least, not in anything related to that kind of stuff.

I liked it, Im curious to see where it goes. Not as good as Fallout, but it worked.

Marvel did a good job when they changed Infinity War : Part One into simply Infinity War.

it came out a week before barbenheimer. and oppie had imax exclusivity which tom cruise makes most of his money from with mi/top gun.

I saw it and liked it. Unfortunately I just saw that Part Two is delayed a year, to May of 2025.

Not really the same thing unless it actually wasn't his first movie

We're kinda hitting the point where like 5 or so movies a year make a lot of money and the rest don't make anywhere near as much.

In general I think this year has seen a pretty big backlash against sequels to old ass movies. Less people are showing up. Indiana Jones got a lot of the attention for this but it wasn't the only movie it happened to.

It made quite a bit less than the previous 3 MI movies with inflation on its side. It's a definite disappointment.

IMAX personally screwed Cruise over by refusing screens in favor of Oppenheimer (bad press)

Huh. Could there have been a... Fallout with Tom and the media?

I think the thing is, most of all most folks are to broke to keep up with modern movie prices and its really going to cause everything to collapse at this point as the middle class kind of is breaking apart.

That dumb Sound of Freedom movie that Trumpers went to in droves. It came out a week or two after Dead Reckoning and ended up having half the gate of Dead Reckoning at only a twentieth of the budget.

Between those three movies in July, Dead Reckoning in June didnt really attract the attention that an otherwise tent pole franchise was expected to get. And it was marketed heavily, it just fell flat.

Dune wasnt advertised as or labeled as Part One until you sat down in the theaters.

that was Sound of Freedom, not this

as alluded to MI mostly struggled because of Barbenheimer. it came out just a week before and Oppenheimer in particular had IMAX on lockdown which cut into MI's profits. the whole "Part 1" thing probably also had something to do with it (especially on its first weekend underperformance) but I'd wager it's mostly this.

Yeah, what happened is, see, people finally started to see through Hollyweirds smokescreen and knew Mission Impossible was only put out to draw attention away from these liberal pizza dungeons.

For real though, what did the sound of freedom end up being? A crying child? A Ford F150 Super Duty?

So people went and saw a movie like sound of freedom instead of mi 7... interesting. There's no accounting for taste when it comes to the masses huh

People were reminded of Scientology after his last hit movie and made the right decision

It's moreso about comparing it to its budget. That crappy movie that overshadowed it grossed literally as much as MI 7's budget, but since its own budget was comparatively pennies, it made a ton more profit
