I'm shocked anyone who knows what a Master System is would also be at the same time shocked to hear someone had one as a kid lol.

No one I know irl would even know what a Master System is. I remember trying to explain the game Zillion to someone and they just insisted I was remembering wrong and I was thinking about Metroid.

I knew a kid who said they had a "Sega" that was 8-bit. I didn't know about the Master System until years later. I do wonder if that was the normal term for the console, just like "Nintendo."

They were big in 'Straya and Brazil, apparently.

I had a Master System as a kid.

First game I ever played was Astro Warrior/Hang-On dual cart.

We also had:
Rastan
Fantasy Zone
Phantasy Star
Alex Kidd
Spellcaster
Baseball
Aztec Adventure
Time Soldiers
Golvellius
Wonder Boy in Monster Land

Thinking back on it, my Dad probably spent a lot on all those games back in the day....we got an NES much later.

Even as a kid in the 90s, I was taken aback to find out they had one before that. I went to some kid's house in like 94 or so who said he had a Sega, and when he pulled it out of the shelf, I just stared at it confused.

I frequently read game magazines and didn't even know it existed.

I don't think I'd even heard of the Master System until decades after it came out. I always assumed Genesis/Mega Drive was Sega's first console.

I only knew one guy with that console when I was very young. Everybody had Atari 2600 or NES. Maybe a couple with Commodore 64.

Same here. We just called it the Sega 8-bit instead of the Master System. But that was by the time the Mega Drive/Genesis was already a thing though.

Sega = Genesis when I was a kid.

People had Atari, nes, snes and sega.

No idea what this Mandela 8 bit sega shit is.

It was until there was more than one console per brand. This is why (great) grandmas still call every video game thing "a nintendo".

I got my first job, back in high school, as a 1-hr photo developer... so I could buy a Nintendo (the original, not the SNES).

My cousin had one, it was a cool system. I remember being wowed by how much better everything looked on it compared to the nes. Of course they only had two games, outrun and safari hunt.

Anyone remember the horrible Game Gear port of this game? You couldn't see two feet in front of Sonic and the game was impossible.

I only knew about it because the Genesis had an addon plugin that would let you play master system games on it, and I got a bunch of them real cheap.

I had a Master System alongside my NES as a kid. The Master System had pretty good ports of After Burner and Outrun.

I had one as a kid and so did most of my friends. But then, I grew up on a council estate so lots of them had it because their parents couldnt afford a more expensive console.

Such a vague post. What did they actually say?

Our first console was a NES. Then again, we were poor and were always a generation behind.

Not impossible! Only one part required a trial and error blind jump (springs over spikes in the zone 4 boss stage). The first boss in the lava zone with the bouncing balls was pretty hard with the reduced screen size.

I would read about them in my game mags. But nothing looked worth playing.

Most of da white kids had da NES, while da Master System was popular with da black kids.
