Odyssey & Mario Rabbids did something new to make an old genre new again by changing the gameplay & mechanics to make playing as Mario in a 30th game more interesting. Wonder is just another 6/10 2D Mario game with a new gimmick like pokemon that they'll abandon for the next game that does something slightly different. Before it was turning into cats while doing this, then it was the crown, now it's elephants, next it'll be some other gimmick people will forget about in a year.

Metacritic is toxic to gaming, and it's not really Metacritic's fault... they're just a resource that represents a really flawed method to create a very basic snapshot impression of critical reception.

The problem comes when people treat that single number derived from incompatible scoring systems that are subject to manipulation from bad actors and paid shills as a sacred and ultimate unassailable truth.

People assuming others havent gotten their hands on the game before release are naive. Nintendo games get leaked all the time early. Switch is a big part of that. Id say more but probably get modded for something assumed lol.

There's a transforming item gimmick for each of these games that people forget about the next time another one comes out. It's like pokemon throwing out mega evos for the gem shit in sword & shield, then before that it was combination forms. Mario games center around a specific gimmick in each of the 2D games that staples it all together, but the games do not inherently change the formula unless it's Rabbids or Odyssey

To be fair, that describes many popular and successful game franchises that are can also be genuinely good. It's not necessarily a bad thing. Games where they have a formula and play style and the next additions are just the same thing with a new gimmick.

Street Fighter, Tekken, Dead or Alive, Souls games, Monster Hunter, Mario Kart, CoD/MW, to name some..

Not only that, but it's just not a good system by the nature of what it's attempting to do. When a gaming site gives a game a 4 out of 5 for example... does that weight into the system as an 80... or a 99? Is a 5 out of 5 nearly impossible perfect 100 at that review site, or are they semi-frequent like an A on a letter grading system, and what are the analogues for letter grades? Is an "F" a 50 or 60 generally bad game like school grades, or is an F like a 25 total failure of a broken game?
