That seems nonsensical to punish the people that voted for the losing candidate, especially in a circumstance where voting for Gym would've been an objectively awful decision.

And if the expectation is for them to toe the party line or cross the aisle, the number of times a legislator crossed party lines to vote for another party's speaker candidate was extremely limited even in saner times. That's just advocating for Speaker Gym on the first or second ballot.

Rep. Dan Meuser (R-Pa.) nodded to the greater conference dynamics in a Sunday letter announcing his bid.

Throughout my life, I have been a fervent proponent for teamwork and the greater good over individual gain, Meuser said.
How can a republican say this shit with a straight face?

Why? The Republican base wanted Jordan. A party's supposed to represent voters, not some notion of objective good.

The Freedom Caucus didn't want McCarthy, but he negotiated with them and they eventually caved and let him in. Jordan tried to negotiate with the institutional GOP, but they straight up ignored him. That's directly obstructing the selection of a Speaker. They are thus a prime cause of the House's dysfunction.

The reality is that any Speaker would be heavily restrained by the clause that any one Congressman can file a motion to vacate. They don't really have the freedom to go crazy.

Do people really not understand that a rule like this would change nothing? Very few of the reps are living paycheck to paycheck or even care that much about the ~170k salary, and any that did become financially troubled by this would immediately find themselves with dozens of lobbyists offering to help them out. Compensation and Lobbying need to be reworked from the ground up (and should be) before anything like this would remotely effect anything.

I agree, but it's also fucking bs that they literally do nothing and get a paycheck and all their benefits. They've spent all but like 3 days of the past 2.5 weeks on vacation.

I don't see current Republicans being able to work together enough to even scrape together 213 votes so they can have the "moral victory" of surpassing Jeffries.

The "Republican base" isn't a monolithic hive mind. The notion that all members are duty-bound to support one douche is nonsensical, especially when the GOP candidate has as much baggage as Gym and that he has absolutely zero track record of leading in the House to pass so much as a fart. There might be a case if he was the minority leader and speaker-designate if an election went a certain way, but that's clearly not the case here.

And all the more weird to bring up when the GOP spent two years reveling in two Dem Senators bucking the party line in the Senate.

Yes, I'm aware, but it the only options were Gym, Jeffries, or financial punishment, the GOP contrarians would've supported Gym, not Jeffries.

And it's all about getting a majority. Anyone getting a plurality is meaningless with that in mind.

Not particularly relevant how the other party reacts. Manchin and Sinema are pathetic traitors who're getting a boot to the ass in 2024 for it. Politicians are elected to advance the party agenda, not sink it.

Bruh, did you not see all the death threats they got from their own base merely for not voting for Jordan?
Imagine if some Reps actually voted for a Dem, how that unhinged base would react.

It'd be nice, but it's not happening. I think they're legit afraid for their lives if they did that.

Yeah, no R is voting for a D here, it would be a literal life risking proposition. And I don't think there is any R that the D's would trust to follow through on any concessions made verbally to them, so I think we are likely stuck with the R's having to figure it out and get everyone in line.

Only other out I could see is if the shutdown is going with no end in sight the D's just pick the least reprehensible R in the pool and push them over the line.

Rep. Mike Flood, R-Neb., said all of the candidates signed his unity pledge, which is a promise to support whoever the conference nominates once there's a floor vote for speaker.

Members have been far more divided over whether they will sign the pledge, however.

So basically useless.

God, he must be one of those people that wants to hold a "pre-meeting" meeting.
Except, the conference effectively already is a pre-meeting.
So he wants people to agree to a pre-pre-meeting (accept the winner of the conference before it happens) for the pre-meeting (the conference) of the meeting (the actual fucking Speaker vote).
Did I capture all that correctly?

All the while facing imminent government shut down over spending because they don't have a speaker to ratify any spending bill. I hope the public is paying attention. This is what your elected officials are doing. Republicans can't even get their shit together to rally behind one person that isn't Donald Trump. This is the state of their party. It's pathetic. If they had any self-awareness, they would be ashamed of themselves.

I'm honestly not worried about the GOP voters, though. They gonna do what they gonna do. My point is about the "moderates": if the GOP voters see just how clownish this whole debacle is, then "moderates" will likely see the same, if not worse. They are also less likely to be swayed by Fox News propaganda, especially if they watch other networks.

No. There was talk of the house giving the speaker pro tempore more power to be able to bring a funding bill to the floor since Republicans couldn't decide on a speaker, but Republicans killed that idea. McHenry also threatened to quit if such power was granted.
