Basically you need 98% of the game done.

The last 2% would be completing Final-Final and getting all Standees.

Oh geez, that's more than I would have expected. I'll get to it eventually...

Yeah it surprised me too. Is this the first Mario game to lock playable content behind 10 coins or flagpoles?

Super Mario 3D Land required all flagpoles for the final level. Pretty much all of them lock something behind all star coins

edit: 3D World also required all flagpoles. I would probably just expect this to be the standard moving forward

And putting the Final Final Test's flagpole in the invisibility section is just mean

I dont really like it either, but if you already did everything else in a level its not too bad to just rush to the end, skip the wonder flower, etc

Yeah getting the flagpole isn't that bad. Gives you a reason to try and speed run. And the little obstacle to get up there is usually fairly easy.

Flagpole is a poor attempt at nostalgia but it's also fairly inoffensive as far as collectibles go

Although I think it would be neat to get a new level ending thing, like we used to get with each game.

Ehhh missing the flagpole to me is just an excuse to replay the wonderful levels in this game. Was also an excuse to see the level without the wonder flower just to satiate my curiosity.
