Of course you don't do it to "save calories", you do it to avoid diabetes.

I prefer to avoid drinking as many calories as I can, so I can eat more. So I'm almost always getting diet sodas to go along shitty fast food meals. It's all about strategy, TC.

It's true, but it didn't mention that if artificial sweeteners are taken with other foods with calories it would negate the craving since it's already covered by the food's calories.

Not at all, you save a ton of calories by not getting a sugary soda and it's the worst part of the meal.

I'll usually get unsweetened tea if a drink is required for the combo

People who do judge are awful, whether it comes from orthorexia or some classist crunchy-ism.
It fosters a bad relationship with food to start calling things good or bad. They're calories - sometimes people need them fast and want something energy-dense, sometimes they don't have the time to be making something and or they're on the road, and sometimes people just want something that makes them happy and gives them some sense of comfort or nostalgia. If you're already judging a person for eating fast food, why would you shame them even further for choosing to save a few hundred calories -- literally? A 12 oz. soda is roughly between 130-150ish kcal -- and lots of those larges at fast food places are 32 oz.+.
The main "threat" of artificial sweeteners is them fooling your body into thinking it's getting glucose and wanting more glucose -- so if you're aware of sugar cravings that can result from artificial sweeteners and you're able to keep them in check then that's fine. The risks of brain cancer, etc. were based on studies conducted on mice - and you'd need to drink an obscene amount of artificial sweeteners for the risk to be significant.

I literally work in a dietetics field. Most of my coworkers are becoming or currently are dietitians. I follow multiple well-known dietitians on social media that debunk food myths.
The vast majority are in support of diet sodas. The people who generally attack artificial sweeteners are either science-bros who fall for hacks like Carnivore MD or people who try way, way too hard to be crunchy.

I don't judge people for what they eat or drink.

If I do, it would be out of actual concern for their health and not to feel smugly superior or to make them feel bad.

I never understood why people got so judgemental about that. Yes the meal is still unhealthy, but that doesn't change the fact that a regular coke adds a ton of calories. A large coke is over 300 extra calories. When I was calorie counting, having a diet coke every now and then was the perfect way to enjoy a soda without sending my daily intake into the negatives.
