Have you heard of the band Charger?

Funny you mention them, because I was debating whether Kim was more popular than Thurston. She certainly stood out more vocally and visually, but I think he's much better regarded as an instrumentalist (and Lee Rinaldo is usually right there with him).

Oddly enough, thinking of her made me think of Kim Deal from the Pixies, who I'm reasonably certain was the most popular member of the band during her tenure.

I think Kim always came off as way cooler to me. Ive always had a crush on her. I dont know enough Sonic Youth fans to survey which one is more popular, but I hope that after he cheated on her and the band broke up that she has more goodwill than him.

Primus, Motorhead and Thin Lizzy were the ones that popped into my head.

Pink Floyd? Roger Waters is more popular than David Gilmour? I think not. More infamous at the moment, but not more popular.

Rush? Again, I'd argue that Neil Peart is more popular than Geddy Lee. But along with Alex Lifeson, all three deserve nothing but love and respect.

Neil Peart was in discussions for being the best drummer in the world at one point. There were only like 2 other people, though for the life of me I can't remember either of them.

Macca has steadily gained popularity through continually putting out music and just being a decent guy. He kept the Beatles around for years after their natural breakup point and forced good work from the others. Sgt. Pepper and Abbey Road are Paul-helmed records. And he's also not known as a terrible father and husband.

John Bonham may lack the sheer technical mastery of Neil Peart (not a dig on Bonham), but he was a great drummer and far more influential.

Zeppelin really shaped that big driving drum sound. There really is two different eras of rock drumming: before and after Zep.

I'd say that Paul definitely had an edge in popularity over John at the height of Beatlemania frenzy, if only because John was quite publicly married / unavailable and Paul was single.
