Information has seemingly come to light regarding SEGAs plans for Sonic the Hedgehog, including DLC for Sonic Superstars and a new game entirely for 2024.

A brand and licensing presentation from SEGA of America was spotted that goes over the companys overall plans for the franchise. Sonic Superstars, which is about to launch on Switch, will supposedly be getting DLC at some point next year. SEGA is also apparently planning a brand new Sonic game entirely for the 2024 holiday season, though the presentation doesnt go into specifics aside from mentioning a prologue planned a few months before launch.

We have a look at the relevant slide below. Note that the presentations validity has not been confirmed which is why were marking this as a rumor.

I don't know, things was pretty mediocre even when he was there, lol. Despite leaving in 2006 he also had a part in that huge steaming pile that was sonic 2006.

Phantasy star online ep 1 and 2 is my favorite game of all time so I still have a bit of love for sonic team around that time period, but at the same time yuji naka always gave those keji inafune vibes in that they both just kinda' got.....blah over time. Compared to both producing some pretty good stuff in the previous console generation, the 7th has not been all too kind to either overall.

Actually I got to take some of that back for keji inafune, he was producing good stuff from the early to mid 2000s like mega man battle network, the zero games, ZX/ZX advent, onimusha, and mega man star force for the gameboy advance and DS, and was a producer for dead rising 1 and capcom vs marvel 3. Also had a part in street fighter 4 coming back and was involved for azure striker gunvolt. Yuji naka had like......rodea the sky soldier I think it was called.

The problem with Sonic 06 is that Sega/Sammy took half of the development team away mid production to work on a Sonic Wii game. Then Sega/Sammy pushed up the release date forcing them to release an incomplete game.

Mostly because, at the very core, Sonic was a tech demo for the Genesis that took off well beyond anyone's expectations. The original gimmick was "look how our guy can move so fast the other console can't even render it." 3D platforming is a lot easier when you're dealing with a short, squat plumber whose signature 3d moves are mostly standing jumps and short dives. You can design an entire mario level that takes 5 minutes to traverse and Sonic would blast through that in seconds. The result is you either railroad players into what are basically QTE segments, you make most of the game playing other, slower characters, or you make gigantic empty worlds that the player blurs past, and neither are particularly fun.

Sega has just never figured out exactly what they would need to do to make a full length 3D sonic game that mostly features Sonic actually fun. Some of it might be a lack of talent, but honestly I don't think it's unfair to say that after literal decades of the trying, it might just be that "go fast, the game" fundamentally doesn't translate to 3D outside of racing games.

I honestly want to see Nintendo try their hand at 3D Sonic. Let them make the game, and let Sega handle the aesthetics and especially music.

The spark the electric jester indie games on the PC/steam is pretty close to showcasing how fun 3D games where you are going fast can also be balanced with some pretty good action and with some nice designed levels.

This video is one of those ranking lists where the uploader is ranking all the stages from spark the electric jester 3, but it still can kind of give you an idea on with this indie series is about:

Its another one of those indies created by one guy. Honestly, it feels like these days you have to just find that one super mega fanboy of a classic game or series and let them take a crack at making a game inspired by whatever they are a fanboy of since these superfans is going to be full of passion and know exactly what a fan would want out of a modern take on whatever game this is. Similar to what christian whitehead is for 2D sonic games....get the guys who start out making cool romhacks to make a game and see if they can come up with a sonic mania type of thing.

Best case scenario an original creator comes back, starts a crowdfunder if they can't get a company to back them for a new game, and hopefully succeed in what they are trying to do like with IGA and bloodstained feeling like a 2D metroidvania successor.
