Talking specifically like comic book super heroes vs shonen anime.

To draw some broad strokes, in comic books the details of the fight are rarely if ever explained. There's probably a speech here and there about personal values, but then the action cuts in and that's it. Quite often the protagonist will be on the losing end until some last second stroke of luck and they roll away just in time to make a killing move. You're left thinking they only got through that by the skin of their teeth.

Example: In Castlevania, you're never really told why Sypha is so good at magic. She just sort of develops over the course of the series, and by the end she is a freakin' master. You don't really ever have a sense of what her limits are, but she almost loses a lot of fights because of a lucky hit here or there.

In shonen anime, every attack is described in detail. The enemy describes how their attacks work, the protagonist describes their move that will defeat them. The pace has to slow right down to accommodate this, but in return you get a clear sense of why the protagonist won (i.e. they were legitimately stronger/cleverer/better). It's as if a character is not allowed to win a fight without exposition on why that was the winning move.

Example: In bleach, pretty much any fight is concluded after a character explains why their attack means they are going to win.

When the West uses anime techniques for combat scenes, we get the best result.

Assuming they are both done competently, when it comes to visual media, I prefer show over tell.
