Might be a stupid question because Ive never really had a proper vacation from a job before so I guess Im not entirely sure how it works. I was always under the impression that if you take a 40 hour vacation its in place of the days you would normally work, and not taking the place of your days off.

But I come to find out that while my vacation next week was approved, they do have me working this upcoming Friday/Saturday which are my normal days off. Which I was not expecting at all because 1. That means Im now scheduled to work 7 days in a row before my vacation which was never the plan and 2. Will I be getting paid overtime now since theyre giving me more hours in addition to my 40 hours? And if thats not the case and I dont get paid overtime from it, is it worth going to my manager to try to still get my two normal days off or should I assume thats the only way theyre going to give me my vacation? Should also mention that my job has enough people, so it shouldnt be an issue of not having anyone to work those two days.

And lastly, should I expect that the following week I will go back to having my normal Friday/Saturday off so that I will then get 7 days off (5 paid, 2 unpaid) to make up for the 7 consecutive days I had to work? Thanks in advance to anyone able to help clear up some of this for me.

They just added two days because you took vacation time? That's really bizarre. Even moreso that you have to go in 7 days in a row. No idea what the policy there is but definitely look into that or talk to someone.

Unless your hours are fixed then your schedule is up to management's discretion. It's not at all normal to schedule someone for additional shifts just because they're about to take a vacation though. Sounds like your manager is just a dick and wants to put the squeeze on you since you're not going to be around.

Yes.

Also try to schedule vacations up against a three day holiday weekend for maximum effect.

Only the days actually booked as vacation, are vacation. The days before / after that would be subject to whatever the usual procedure around extra days is, just like they would be if the vacation wasn't happening.

Not sure about the US, and individual contracts may change this, but here it'd be that they can't just compel you to work them but they can ask and you can agree to if you want.

Usually your regular days off don't get messed with and it makes it easier to figure out your vacation.

But I've only worked retail/forestry/legal so maybe it's different in your field.
