Going to a family member's wedding on Saturday as a guest. I mean, I'm not wearing jeans to the thing, but I was wondering just how egregious it would be if i did. Like if I got too drunk the night before and puked all over my dress suit.

I wore jeans to my dad's wedding because I couldn't find my Dockers, thought he would flip out but he didn't.

Dude. Just wear slacks and a dress shirt, dress shoes. That's the bare minimum.

My outfit is already prepared for the wedding. I was just thinking hypothetically.

I think you'd need to know to an absolute certainty that jeans are okay before it would be socially acceptable to wear them at a wedding. Even for something more casual, like a beach wedding, something specific like khakis and sandals are the norm, not jeans. Basically, unless you're certain it's ok to dress that casually, dress up to a wedding.

If it's a big expensive formal wedding then probably not. They'd want everyone looking fancy. If it's in someone's back yard then whatever.

You'll probably be told it's 'dumb' and 'snobby' to expect you to turn up in anything other than a faded anime t-shirt and a pair of piss-stained shorts.

Out of respect you should dress formal, considering its pretty much one of the most formal events any regular person will ever go to. You would only wear jeans if they were explicitly listed in the dress code.

My friend got married in a barn last year. It was like faux-low-brow, because it actually cost him like 50k all-in-all. But it was done up really nice. Almost medieval in a way, with the dinner and reception. You might even call it a themed wedding, tbh. And about 1/3 of the people there wore jeans. Not skater-boy cutoffs with a chain, but nice country denims.

I voted sometimes, depends on the people.

I live in a major farming/agriculture state of the Midwest. Jeans are common at weddings and funerals as a guest. The only time a nicer outfit is worn is as an actual member of the wedding party.

it is actually quite casual, the most casual wedding i'll have ever been to. The dinner and reception are at boutique restaurants downtown. It's very small, too -- 40 max including family.

When they invited you to a potentially limited guest list event where they probably paid a premium for your dinner, drinks, desserts, snacks, etc., then the least you could do is look decent for some hours

This is basically how my friend i referenced in post#13 is. But I'm from the same culture. Its basically just common sense -- like don't wear jeans to your grandma's funeral, but your uncle's wedding? And you're at a table in the back? of course. As long as it looks nice.

It goes:
1. Bride
2. Groom
3. Wedding Party
4. Any others that may be in official photos

If you're not in any of those tiers then nobody gives a shit what you're wearing at a wedding.

I literally just listed reasons. It's about mutual respect lol

But as others have stated, it depends how the actual wedding is. There are fairly casual weddings and ones that can be like at a backyard or something. And how tight you are with the groom/bride.

Or if like you had agreed to do a group costume for a costume contest and you dressed up as Han Solo and your friend dressed up as Luke skywalker and his wife dressed up as Princess Leia and then the fourth friend who was supposed to be Chewbacca came dressed as Batman

that would be frustrating

Every wedding I've ever been to has had people with jeans, but every wedding I've ever been to has been in southern Missouri, so I imagine that has a lot to do with it.

When in doubt, wear slacks. You have nothing to lose by wearing slacks. But you do, if you wear jeans.

I think the mutual respect thing is pretty important, but on the day of the actual wedding everyone is going to be so preoccupied with themselves they're not going to give a damn what someone that didn't even come with them is wearing. So as long as TC can withstand criticism leading up to the wedding, whatever tc wears on the actual day is going to be ignored.

Yah as I mentioned above, we're already coordinated up. It's my (only) sister's wedding and there will be dozens of family photos with us and our parents, and her husband and his parents and sisters. So OBVIOUSLY I'm not gonna wear Jeans lol. Maybe if they had it out here in Calgary it'd be a different story. But it's very upscale-hipstery.

Depends on the venue imo. If its an event center or a regular ass wedding chapel, sure. If it's a country club or somewhere "nicer" then no. I'd still wear them tho regardless. Slacks suck and are negative swag.
