I'm guessing Sonic was the result of some freak experiment by Robotnik on woodland critters

No concrete answers for Sonic in the game universe, Mario was delivered by a stork.

Sonic was designed to fuck up Nintendo.

Well, the old manuals, specifically the Japanese ones, do have some stuff, but Sega is pretty inconsistent with deep Sonic lore, especially since they currently classify "classic Sonic" as an alternate universe. There's also a lot of options across all the comics/manga, though mileage will vary, regarding their quality.

Sonic is actually a prince. He and his siblings have their own rock band.

Mario is an Italian-American from Brooklyn.

In some old comics, Robotnik used to be a kindly scientist, who was friends with the animals. Sonic was his best friend but then there was a lab accident and Robotnik went insane. Also, he built Sonic's shoes

This was from a comic I read back around the time that Sonic 2 was released

The movies covered both.

The origin of sonic changes dramatically if you ask Sega or Ken Penders.

This is never actually stated in the games at all, and is directly contradicted by Yoshi's Island. It's true for the shows/movies/etc., but not canon to the games.

Donkey Kong presumedly in the Mushroom Kingdom world, now with the existence of stuff like New Donk City.

Mario Bros just in some sewer. In interviews they've said the initial thought was New York sewers, but they say they literally did not put any actual thought into it and it doesn't actually mean anything for the rest of the series.

The Yoshi's Island series and New Donk City suggest they've moved away from that idea for the games.

EDIT: I actually forgot they say New Donk City (or whatever it was before) is literally where Donkey Kong took place, since the festival is meant to celebrate the city's beginnings.

There's actually an in depth comic that explains sonic's origins. Search "Sonic Inflation" in google images and it'll be the top result.

Mario is a celebrity and his friends (including Bowser) like to put on shows, kart racers and parties for the entertainment of the general public.

The NES games were their humble beginnings doing small scale shows. SMB3 was a stage show. The World games were story books. Then from Mario 64 onwards there's a Lakitu who films everything.

He is now a massive celebrity with entire race tracks and giant locations of real estate named after him and his friends.

Which they've admitted many times was never actually said in the games anywhere, it was just what they had initially thought/decided. Between it never actually being stated in the games, and the various games that retcon it (Yoshi's Island, New Donk City being where Donkey Kong took place, etc.), it's not the origin story for the games, just to certain versions of Mario.

Much like how Sonic has different origins depending on the media, whether games, comics, movies, etc.

Comic/Movie/etc. Sonic has set origins, the games don't, really. Similarly, Mario has a set origin in the shows/movies, but not really in the games.

Much old gaming lore is only explained in the manual or being word of God, and us playing Mario Bros back in the days knew that the story was set in New York.

Are you sure about that? The manual doesn't mention New York (or any story, at all), and the internet didn't exist back then for "word of God" to be well known.

So was I. That information literally did not exist to us, at the time. There was no internet or anything like Nintendo Power for us to read about it, at the time, and the manual has no story at all, let alone any mention of New York. Hell, the cartoons didn't even come until later to even put the idea in our heads.

So how did you apparently know the "story" of Mario Bros (which has no story apparent in the manual or the game) took place in New York?

You're either stuck on hindsight or making stuff up.

EDIT: In fact, Miyamoto himself never said it publicly until many years later.

The games aren't real events. They're stories with actors. Behind the scenes they're all friends. Mario being delivered by stork literally doesn't mean anything because it was just his character for Yoshi's Island.

Even with that, there is still nothing in the games making New York canon at all. It just means he has no actual origin at all in the games.
