but it's also one of those nostalgia smells cause my wife and I bought our first house the day before Thanksgiving and when we moved in the previous owners had the HVAC system off since temps were still in the 60s most days but on move-in day it dipped down into the 30s so we turned the heat on and got to smell that dust burning smell.

So every time I smell it I'm reminded of moving into the first house we ever bought

Depends on the kind of heating system you have but that smell is burning dust, if you vacuum the part that heats up you largely eliminate the dust burning smell.

It's weirdly nice. Not great, but nice. Speaking of seasons and smells, nothing beats the smell of a crisp chill Autumn/winter night though.

Youre not, your furnace filters the dust in the system. Although if you have one of those 1 filters its not great.

Personally I have small heaters attached to the walls in each room, you vacuum inside them to get dust away from the coil that heats up.

My parents had a furnace system that was well sealed and didn't get the burning dust smell each year so we didn't need to do anything beyond sealing the vents each spring.

So yeah, learn how to do proper basic maintenance on whatever sort of heating system you have and you will likely have minimal to no burning dust smell.

The actual furnace should be cleaned once a year. I have my AC serviced in spring and furnace in fall.
