It's not in most of the US, but it's 18 in a few particularly influential states (and a couple where it's 17). Though even then, I believe most have close in age exemptions, which IMO is better than just a flat age of 16.

Why?
It's entertainment, just like movies and TV. It speaks to the human condition that we value distraction so highly. Why do actors/artists deserve the big bucks, but not athletes?

More specifically the electoral system. In Murrica it's rigged in several ways that only Democrats and Republicans stand a chance at winning. The only conceivable way another party could possibly win is if it has a candidate who suddenly becomes super popular in dozens of states super quickly, and even then there are still a bunch of hurdles that make it unlikely for a third party to win.
