I been mad at Maher for a while now but, at the very least he has a point that no one should really just get away with making up stuff no matter what side your on and that the truth has to mean something.

Dont know the comedian hes talking about or what he said. If hes making up stories about real people then thats obviously a problem. But if its just made up stories to prove a point then thats something that most comedians do.

Bill Maher has always been a vocal critic of the left, even while belonging to that very side of the political aisle. If anything Maher just appears to be on the "right" because of how far left the average liberal is now.

One of his made-up stories is about a specific person that didn't go to prom w/ him b/c he's brown. Except that never happened, she's now married to a (different) Indian guy, and the married couple have been getting death threats. Bill covered it in the video.

Making up stories about hate crimes that galvanizes people to be angry at another group is not the fucking same as all as the typical comedian lies about their zany family or whatever.
Hasan is a really funny dude and I enjoyed his Patriot Act show and his time on the Daily Show. He doesn't need to incite bigotry and hatred with bull shit stories, yet he chooses to anyway. He's a scumbag.

Pretty sure Bill is a progressive and liberal guy. Also he is ultra based.

First of all, I just want to say that his opening about Trump not accepting a defeat is so on point, that it's absurd that we don't discuss it more. Seriously, when asked the Republican primary leading into the election whether he would accept the results of the election, Trump responded with, & I quote: "I will accept it, if I win", & I feel we really didn't focus on such an absurdly contentious answer, as we should, & it plays in my mind every time I think about all the BS he pulled to overturn the election, especially 1/6.

I'm personally not a fan of a lot of Maher's takes these days, but really, I feel like the current left is basically a result of "he who fights monsters", & if "emotional truth" is seriously a thing, it only reinforces that sentiment, as it basically just sounds like "alternative facts" for leftists.

Yeah, the tell with this brand of "anti-cancel culture" stuff is the lack of proportionality. I remember joking that Admiral had crafted an entire politics in response to college students who could not fill a football stadium. But you see it in the NYT op-ed writers fixating on arguments about cultural appropriation on some liberal arts college while mum about the use of state power against say, critics of Israel or trans people.

There's a need felt by some people to be the reasonable center, beset on both sides by radicals and crazies. It's a cool brand; you get to be called a "principled truth teller" and cite that one Churchill quote about enemies. That mental narrative requires couching ones criticism of the right in equal criticism of the left - regardless of the scale of each's issues.

I don't like Maher but there's nothing wrong with the video. "Emotional truth" is just the other side of the coin from "alternative facts".

There is a difference between doing that for jokes and doing it to gain sympathy and social justice points to tug on someones heart strings. He also did interviews pretending that he got an anthrax scare letter that fell on his child

I've heard people who have worked with and know Minaj in both a professional and acquaintance capacity and it's not as simple as he embellished or made up stories for the stage. He presents himself as an authority on the subject, has talked about a lot of "truth" on subjects, and as a result has become a trusted source on the subject, even if he is a comedian. Sort of like how you trust a black comedian who grew up in a ghetto to be an authority on what it's like to grow up in the ghetto when you have no idea. Imagine if you found out that dude grew up in the whitest, most gated and affluent society imaginable and has never even seen an impoverished ghetto.

The people I'm talking about who know him are also Muslim and talk about how him blatantly lying on subjects he's trusted on will discourage discrimination against Muslims/Arabs in the future being taken seriously. Similar to how Jussie Smollett's lying stunt lets right-wingers bring up doubt about racially motivated incidents against black men.

But also, stfu Bill Maher, you complain about woke, cancel culture, and the youth. You platform the Christo-fascist Ron DeSantis and cry about the same things, so your opinion here is worthless to me. Especially since you're trying to compare the damage Minhaj has done to what Trump has done. Just fucking ludicrous.

I haven't watched the video yet, but the topic is at least framed EXACTLY THAT WAY. That these 2 are comparable, and they simply are not.

Very rarely do people ever say the left is perfect or that whatever is being bitched about isn't a problem. It's when people say they are comparable to things from the right that gets people's ire.

If you buy $20 worth of scratches once a week and someone says you are just as bad as the person who steals from their family, has gone into massive debt, and multiple bankruptcies because of their gambling addiction, you're probably going to say wait a minute, hold up.
