It gives her directly something to do and gives her agency in the plot while also solving the issue of having Peter Parker having to do journalist stuff instead of being Spider-man. If she's a super model in the video game she'd have jack shit to do outside of being rescued or being a nag. I also don't really see how she's not physically attractive? She's very obviously supposed to be a catch in the video game. She's just more like a Lois Lane and Vicki Vale in this depiction. There's a reason comic book love interests are either reporters or thieves in superhero stories. It works. The artists went back and forth between making her half-Asian or half-Italian. But she was originally Black.
