To be fair, it seems like Sonic Frontiers doesn't use the Super Emeralds at all. It seems like this "Super Sonic 2" is something entirely different.

I'm curious, now. I plan to play Frontiers soon.

Hyper Sonic is tied to the Master Emerald so that's probably why. And also they don't want to bring it back because they're afraid of things devolving to DBZ-like power creep. This "new form" introduced in Frontiers is meant to be a one-off power boost that Sonic can never get again.

In-game, the form isn't given any sort of name, but in files it's called Super Sonic 2, likely for sorting convenience.

Yeah, Hyper Sonic was originally part of the story planning for Sonic Frontiers and would've involved a very similar powerup sequence that the story DLC implements, but was rejected. Was probably why the game launched with what seemed like a rushed final boss with SHMUP gameplay.

Even that doesn't work, because Mario dies in two hits, which takes a lot less than 30 seconds.

Even if you argue 64 health bar onward, his air meter and health bar are the same, so he still basically dies in two hits. But in that case, I'm pretty sure 3D Sonic no longer drowns in 30 seconds like 2D Sonic did, though I may be wrong.
